Milled putter care

I bought a used Ping Redwood putter a few days ago, and was curious as to whether there were any steps, if any, I needed to take to properly care for my new club. It currently has some small rust spots, mainly cosmetic (the ball feels absolutely glorious coming off the face), but I wanted to maintain it as well as I could.

If it has a head cover then keep it on, otherwise buy one for it, you won't have any trouble finding one. Are the rust spots on the face? You could sand them off, I don't think it would affect the ball coming off the face at all if you're careful.

For sure keep a head cover on it, if you have rust, spray some WD40 on it and wipe it down real good. Also after you finish playing wipe it down real good and make sure the head cover isn't damp on the inside, storing a milled putter in a damp head cover is one of the main reasons for creating rust spots.

Well the the rust spots aren't really spots so much as flakes, so I sanding would surely do more damage than leaving it be.

A little steel wool would do the trick. I used it in the cavities of my last irons, and there was no marks post rust spot removal.

Naval jelly works well to remove rust too. I used a bit to remove rust from an older milled putter and it looks brand new.

Do you have a dremel tool? if so, get a polishing wheel(cloth) and some white polishing rouge. This is a mildly abrasive compound that will not remove the finish. I am a machinist on the side and have been for years, I know how to remove rust. Trust me, if you take your time and only push the wheel in the same direction, you will not damage your putter.
