Played several rounds with a couple Bridgestone j36 hybrids and loved them. Problem is I don't know what lofts to get. My irons are Mizuno MP-57's and the 5 iron is 27*. The Bridgestone hybrids I tried were 19* and 22*. Should I stick with these and have a 5* gap or get the 22* and 25* and have a 2* gap? I easily hit the Bridgestones farther than my current TM hybrids which are the same lofts as the ones I tried.

How well do you hit the MP-57 5-iron? I pulled it and use a 25* Adams hybrid, a 22* Nickent and a 19* Ping.

Testing is the best way to determine that. The loft is relative and I don't think you can go by the set of irons and match lofts with hybrids. I personally hit a hybrid much further than an iron of the same loft. I have the Adams Idea Pro hybrids in 20 and 24 degrees. They say the 20 degree is a 3 iron, but I'll never hit a 3 iron as high and far as I hit that club. The same for the 4 hybrid. For me the 24 degree hybrid goes about 225 making it more like a 3 iron, and the 20 degree goes 240, making it more like a 2 iron.

Hit some hybrids side by side with your irons to see what would be the right lofts for you. You want to avoid having big distance gaps between your longest iron and the first hybrid. I end up swapping out hybrids and long irons depending on the course I'm playing.

I don't hit the 5-iron very will but usually hit the 6 pretty good. If I had the money I'd drop the 5-iron and get the 19*, 22*, and 25*. That was kinda my long term plan anyway. The problem with testing is I can't take the hybrids to the range. They are demo clubs at a course I play. Any use has to be on the course.

I carry Mizuno Fli-Hi CLK hybrids in 17*, 23* and 26*. Basically they replace my 5W/2I (17* for this - it's steel shafted so not quite as long as a 17* with graphite, but easier to control as backup driver), 3I (23*) and 4I (26*). I also bought MX-900 irons to replace my 5I and 6I (had to have them bent 2 degrees weaker to match gaps in my MP-60's though). This set does a good job with gap coverage as I have about 12-15 yards difference between each hybrid and about 10-12 between 26* and 5I.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
