New Iron Set For Solid Single Handicapper

I'd like some advice on which irons I should try out at the practice range. I'm a solid single handicapper who has been playing the same Titliese DCI oversize irons for 10 years.

I do not work my irons ball flight in either direction, and I would like some added distance (I hit my 7 - 160 yards). Thanks in advance for your help.

This is very hard to answer. If you don't work the ball at all, try some superforgiving clubs (G10s, X22s, etc.). You may hook them, but I'm sure there is a superforgiving club that isn't a shovel or hook machine.
I personally don't like superforgiving clubs (lack of feel, etc.), and if you're the same, try some players cavities. PING i10, X22 tours, MP 52s, AP2s, CG7 Tours, etc. All are fairly forgiving, have minimal offset, and are geared towards low(er) handicappers.
I would stear clear of blades if you don't work the ball because they will show all swing flaws and will hurt on slight misshits. Plus, a main function of blades is working the ball.

As for distance, if you get your irons properly fitted, you'll probably gain distance. It's tough to say though. Also, today's irons have strong lofts when compared to older irons. You may find you hit your new PW as far as your old 9 iron. However, the difference is probably in the loft of the club. (I heard TM TPs are long clubs with traditional lofts...something to look at.)

Ok, I recently had a chance at a Demo Day to try the Ping i10 and g10's. I preferred the i10's and definetely did like them. So from your advice I would be better off also testing the X22's tours, MP 52's, AP2s and the CG7's. Are the X22 tours and CG7's Calloway's and Clevelend's respectively? What about the Ap1's?

I have never been fitted for irons and will definetely be doing that this time around.

Is there a certain price range you fall in? Or are you willing to spend whatever? The X-22 Tours are certainly a really nice club for someone of your caliber of player. I play the MP-57's. I can work the ball with them, but they are forgiving enough that when you miss with them, it isn't a complete loss of yards, but you can feel it when you don't stripe it perfect. If money isn't an issue also check out the Titleist AP2's and Ping S57's...they are really nice clubs as well.

I'm a big fan of Mizuno MP irons and those should definitely get a look from you. If you're not as worried about workability be sure to try out the MP-52 and 57 models. Both have a little forgivness, but are still designed for better players.

I also wanted to mention the Adams Pro Gold irons, though. They are forged and felt almost as good as Mizuno's but cost a little less.

I think you'll be fine with any club that doesnt have GI offsets. There are many to chose from.

can't say enough about the Nike Pro Forged Combos
it's the best of all 3 worlds..3-4 cavaity back, 5-7 muscle back, 8-PW full blade
i have about 4 full rounds in with them and it keeps getting better

I am a 6 and I love my x-20 tours. Great workable club was awesome distance. Couldn't be more happier with them.

Another option: Bridgestone J36 CBs, pretty decent prices on eBay and great irons.

Thanks for all the advice so far...I'm definetely going to get to a range and test some out this evening. I do have a price range in mind (No More than $800), but if something really blows me away I would probably splurge for it. Sounds like I have a lot of options...If anything else comes to mind, please post.

You could try TM 09 burners, tour burners, or maybe even the nike vr forged. They are all around your price range. I use to play the tour burners and i really liked them. The lofts were a little stronger then standard. Great feel. and they are $399 new.

Don't think this is true for all single handicaps. Some don't follow all the new equipments that come out. I know a couple guys with single handicaps that play with old clubs and doesn't have any clue as to the new technology that is out. One of them tried out my hybrid and recently replaced his 5 wood with a hybrid.

No, I haven't purchased a set in 10 years. Buying a new set of clubs is an investment for me, I have no intentions of switching every couple years. I want to make sure I pick the right set.

i have been to many demo days in the past month and the irons that seem the best to me for all around feel and workability are the Mizuno MP-62's! this is the next set im going to buy. if you would like a little more forgiveness and a little less workability you could try the MP-52's or the 57's

the 52's are a muscle back and the 57's are a cavity back.
