1st year golfer. Hitting 95-105. My bag atm contains

Putter-----TM Spider
Driver-----Titleist 983e
4 Wood 18*
5Hybrid 25*
7 Iron (34*?)
Chipper (37*?)
9 Iron (44*?)
52* wedge
60* Wedge

It's a mixed up set... I gave my PW away since the difference was only 3* to my 9 iron and replaced it with the 52*. I still haven't really used either the 52* or the 5 hybrid much. The chipper was a gift, and seems good for close shots on flat surfaces. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

you really should have a club every 3-5* to be ideal..until you get up to your wedges, then you can make do with what you have. i would get a 21* 3 hybrid, a 30* iron and a 41* iron to fill those gaps, or something along those lines

btw i probably wouldnt have given the pw away and wouldve added a 54* sw instead, but its alright

I'd pick up a matched set of irons at least from 4 - pw. There seem to be a lot of holes in that set as it is, but I bet it's a light bag so easy to carry.
Bag: VT3 Stand Bag
Driver: 10.5* Offset Driver
Fairway Wood: Offset 3 Wood
Hybrid: Cobra Baffler DWS 20*
Irons: King Cobra II Oversize Irons 3 - PWWedges: Slingshot 4D SW 55*Putter: Crossbax 3.0 MalletBalls: Whatever I can find cheap.

You haven't said if money is at all an issue. If you don't mind spending a few $$, then I would suggest like frogger said to get a matched set from 4-PW or SW. You can find them used for cheap on ebay or craigslist, if not here. If not, then I think you should get a true sand wedge with some bounce, and fill in the gaps in your set. If you get to 14 clubs, lose the chipper, as a choked down 7 or 8 iron will do the same thing.

Good Luck!

What I use is listed above, what is available is

Putter-----TM Spider
Driver-----Titleist 983e (8.5*)
4 Wood 18*----Taylormade Burner Tour
5Hybrid 25*----Intech
5 Iron 26*-----Tour Craft Oversize
6 Iron 29*------Callaway X-16
7 Iron (33*)---Golden Bear
Chipper (37*?)--Dunlop
9 Iron (41*)---Taylormade Burner Oversize
50* wedge-----Callaway X-16
52* wedge-----Callaway f2 (little weird)
55* SW--------Callaway Big Bertha
60* Wedge-----D&M; 6*bounce (only one I know offhand)

It is a mixed bunch, I am getting a Larger bag this weekend, so yes, I was going for light . I got the 5,6,50, 52, and hybrid from 2 course's finder bags (guess they probably shouldn't have done that).

I have a baby coming in a few months, so I'm not currently able to drop $400-1000 on a set of matching Irons. I may just get matching grips or try to pick up them up on ebay 1 at a time(same set) for now.

I was using the wrong chart from wiki, fixed.

So far, at least get a PW and 21* Hybrid right? Guess I drop the 52 and go 50,55,60?
Edit-On the Hybrid, would anything 20-23* be ok? The old one is very rough- chipped shaft etc. easily replaceable. Looking at 3dx's.

Thanks

You can get a decent used set for anywhere from $50. I just bought a set for $60 to replace my Ben Hogan Apex Edge set. Look around the classifieds for a set of matching used irons. I can guarantee that you will find a set for $100 easily.

For ~ $150 you can get some quite serviceable older sets in "average" condition from CallwayGolfPreowned.com. That's not the cheapest source, but it's totally effortless and the prices seem to generally be in the right ballpark. They offer non-Callaway clubs also, but it's sometimes hard to spot the link...

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

You definitely don't have to spend that much to get a matching set of irons. I just bought everything in my signature except the bag in almost new condition off craigslist for $225. You just need to shop around.

You want matching irons/hybrids for consistant distances and feel for the clubs. Like everyone else is saying, you can get a used set for really cheap, just shop around or get on ebay.

I was just helping a co-worker look for some used irons on Craigs List and we found many sets for <$200. Some even had woods and/or wedges with them.

eBay can be a very nice place to pick up irons too. People seem to think they'll get more than craigslist prices but if they are a year or two old the prices are very reasonable. Shipping can be the catchy part.

Edited to say: A quick tip for searching on craigslist is to use 3-pw for your search as opposed to "Callaway irons". This doesn't limit you to a brand or specific model but shows you everything. I had much better luck yesterday with this approach.

In the bag:

-Driver: R9 9.5* MWT: Left FCT: NeutUp
-3w: Fusion 3w
-Hybrid: 585h 19*, 585h 24*-Irons: 755 Forged 5-PW-Wedges: Vokey 52.08* | 56.12* | 60.06-Putter:-Ball: DT | ProV1

When I found mine, I simply used the search term "golf club" and that worked well too.
