Hi all-

New member here. To give you a brief history, back when I was in junior high and high school, I used to golf occasionally...probably 7 or 8 times a year. I had a cheap set of clubs that I bought used. When I went to college, golfing didn't figure into my budget so I stopped. Fast forward 10 years and my good friend invited me to go golfing in Palm Springs this past weekend. I borrowed one his sets and had a blast! We played Shadow Ridge and SilverRock (played from the tips on that latter...7500 yards!!).

Suffice to say, I'm hooked again. My question to you guys is what do you recommend in terms of a good set of clubs for the occasional golfer? I'm not looking for the top of line, latest and greatest...but something that's decent and will last me a long time. I figure if I really get into it, I can upgrade later. Is there a good place online that's known to have really good deals?

Thanks for the help!!

Hre's my humble opinion:

If you do not want to overly invest in clubs at the moment (which, I agree, is smart) get a set from a local sporting goods store or online. You should be able to get a complete set of Dunlops or something for 200 or 300 (including the bag).

Take a few lessons from a pro. They are not overly expensive and will help you get the swing fundamentals back in place.

Chances are that within a year or two you are going to be completely sucked in and looking to upgrade your clubs. When you invest high dollar, be sure to get them fitted.

Enjoy the game!

I agree. Get back into it with a cheaper set. Instead of buying new cheap clubs like the "Walmart Special" brand of the week, you might look at picking up some older brand names online. You can find great 5 year old Mizuno or Callaway or Ping irons that were top-of-the-line then, for under $200. Same with a wood. Grab an old Ping or Taylor Made from ebay or the used bin at the local golf store for $50 and avoid the $300 new club until your swing is consistent and you feel limited by your current equipment, and then get it custom fitted.

Yeah, I agree too. This is good advice because if you don't spend a ton of money on clubs, you could put that money to a couple lessons.

You'd be shocked at how much you'd improve from just a few lessons with a local pro, and they really are not too expensive. Here are some clubs from a website that's known for good deals. (it's a legit site though) http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/wilson...-with-bag.html ^^^This looks like a great deal, and a very very good set to get "back into" the game with. Good luck, and have fun.

I would suggested some used clubs. They are cheap and thats a good thing as until you really got you swing back you'll not know what flex shaft and other specs are going to work for you long term

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
