I just can no longer hit my irons. I bought irons that are probably too advanced for me (MP-52) and I just have been having a ton of trouble hitting them with any consistency/distance. My 5-iron goes anywhere from 140-175.. I assume this means my ball striking is horribly inconsistent. I am working with a pro, but part of me regrets not getting the Project-X shafts just because of how much lighter they are (my irons feel extremely heavy when I swing them).

So would it be pointless to go take advantage of Golfsmith sales or buy a used cheap set of the Callaway X-20 tours or X-20's or X-22s? I like the way the ball comes of the face and I feel at this point it is almost mental with my irons.. Any advice out there I would really appreciate anything and everything.

Thanks so much.

I don't think new clubs are the answer, although because this stupid game is so mental it might. If your pro can't get you to the point of hitting these irons at least somewhat consistently you might want to check out a different pro. As for the shafts - at this point that is also partly mental. I know when I have bought something and then get an idea that something about what I bought is not right it gets in my head and I have trouble getting past it.

The MP-52's are the most forgiving MP irons possibly ever from Mizuno. They are not that much more difficult to hit than some of the game improvement irons suchs as the X series irons from Callaway. If you can get through your current struggles I think you'll be better off in the long run with the Mizzies.

And I'll assume you have already done this, but make sure your irons are properly fit for you (such things as length, lie, grip size - these are all easy to fix and low in cost). Shaft flex is also really important, but costs more. The PX shafts are kind of expensive to just replace your current with. If money is not an option, then go for it because this might help give you more confidence and help your improvement process.

yep, go check ur lie angle. I used Nike cci iron before change to MP 67, and Nike cci are pretty light. I took me a while to get used to MP 67, and now I really like them.

and if u want to buy new club, especially stock clubs, u better buy online. But the best is to go get fit from local golf course. I bought MP67 from Golf Smith, and I felt stupid. I gotta changed loft and lie after that. So, no more buying stock clubs for me, and I don't recommend anyone to do it

If you what length, lie, shaft and grip you need, it is possible to order clubs online, fitted to your specs. You can also get a set cheap from eBay and have a fitter adjust the lie for you.

Those MP-52's seem like awesome clubs.

I don't think lighter clubs or shafts will help if you are having inconsistency problems with the heavier clubs. I would pick one of the clubs, perhaps a 6 or 7 iron, and just focus on working through the swing issues with it, trying to find out what aspects of your swing are contributing to the problem.

With the one club take slower, easier swings and focus on hitting a particular target at a short to medium-range, while maintaining your balance on the follow-through. Make sure not to rush the transition from the backswing to the downswing.

If you manage to get close to the target consistently then aim for a more distant target, working your way up to the optimal range where you can be consistent.

If you find a point between targets where the inconsistency problem arises, perhaps you can demonstrate that to your pro and the source of the problem will surface (so the pro can identify the issue).

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

    • Day 305 - Grip and backswing work. Full swings were bothering the hip a bit.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
