As you can see I currently play with an Odyssey White Hot XG #9. To be honest I chose it mostly because of its appearance, but I do putt "OK" with it. However, after a couple of rounds and some practice time with it, I'm not overly impressed with the feel and am wondering if it could be the insert.

How do you feel about insert putters vs. milled? There are a few out there (like the Ping iWi Anser) that have an insert covered by a steel plate, how do those compare to insert/milled putters?

I have both insert and milled putters. I like the feedback of my old milled blade, but I tend to find the hole better with a putter with an insert. I feel I can control the speed and line better with my insert putters. I have a Odyssey White Steel that is a steel milled insert surrounded by their white insert, and I like the feel of it a lot.

The mixed-insert putters intrigue me, it seems like they could be a nice cross between the two worlds. My putter is definitely "soft" when striking the ball, but it seems like the insert may be absorbing too much feedback for my liking.

Please keep in mind, it's a matter of personal opinion, but once I moved to milled putters with no inserts I have never looked back. I do not miss inserts in the least.

i know exactly what you mean. i also have the XG9 (not gaming it though) and yes, it has an extremely soft feel to it. my FGP is a milled face putter and i definitely prefer the feedback i get from a milled face putter. however, sometimes i do feel like using a softer faced putter, so every once-in-awhile i will game the XG9.

if i had to choose between one or the other, i would definitely go milled face over insert. but thats just me. but theres nothing wrong with inserts either. it just depends on what YOU like. i actually have a milled Dunlop RG Designs Redneck putter that I found that has the softest feel of any milled putter Ive ever used. It has a unique finish on it that came from the factory too. i was told Dunlop only made 25 of them, but I cant verify that as being fact. Ive heard them being called " a poor mans Cameron ", lol. I would game this putter but its just too pretty. It feels amazing and here is my FGP

I know that putters are a very personal thing, and definitely plan on hitting some local shops to test drive as many as I can. I'm just curious if anyone else has moved away from inserts for being overly soft feeling.

actually, up until I switched to the FGP, i played nothing but insert putters (all Odyssey). but i have since found that i prefer the feel of a milled face putter. however, i wont rule an insert putter out either. im sure this doesnt help you very much though, sorry

I hate insert putters. My friend has the White Hot Tour #1 putter, and it sucks. It's like hitting a mush-ball whenever I putt with it.

Just to opposite for me. I switched to an insert putter. Feedback….who cares? I don't care about feedback when I'm putting. Besides, the feeling when using an insert putter is not completely muted. Switching to an insert putter helped me control distance on a much more consistent basis. Totally a personal thing.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
