Jay Flemma (who I'll invite to respond to this thread) and I are going to meet up in North Carolina towards the end of the month to play three courses. I fly in on the 25th and fly out on the 27th, so here's the schedule and our tee times:

Fri, 1:18pm: The Pit by Dan Maples
Sat, 10:10am: Tobacco Road by Mike Strantz
Sun, 8:12am: Mid-Pines by Donald Ross

I believe we may get to play The Pit with Dan Maples himself. We'll each have our own full write-ups when we return, I'm sure, and Jay will probably link to a few of the articles he's written on Tobacco Road when he responds.

Total cost, including my flight, rental car, 2 nights stay at a Residence Inn, breakfast, and 3 rounds of golf: $420 + dinner (and souvenirs).

Total for my golf package is $203...three dyas golf and two nights stay. With a jacuzzi. I am driving...ten hours...STUPID. I remember driving the ten hours straight last year and getting out of the car and having to "wing it" at Tot Hill farm in the same group as the director of golf. Add in that I had breakfast that morning at "Iron skillet"...they call it that because the mystery meat they serve you sits like an iron skillet in your stomach...and tastes like an Iron skillet. Needless to say, I flailed...badly. I rallied nicely the next day at Tobacco road for a stellar 87. Doesn't look like much of a score to you? Guess again! Check out http://jayflemma.blogspot.com and scroll down to the Tobacco Road articles and see why most people shoot a bowling score while there! I'll start a thread about the road here too.

I'm a bit of a wall flower when I am on golf tour, Eric. I'll be big on lots of sleep, lots of jacuzzi, a jog, eating healthy, and practice practice practice. (...and it still does me little good!) I am really excited about this for a couple reasons. First, I knock two more courses off the list. Second, I play for a pittance. $203 for 3/2? You can't beat that with a stick. Third, its bloggers connecting and building the golf blogsphere. Soon, we'll beable to have a blogger cup tournament.

Dang, $420 sounds quite reasonable.

We'll see what we can do, Dan. Let us know closer to when you're coming. If you're coming in the summer, I'm not too sure you want to be out golfing in AZ and NV!

I've played all three of those courses, as well as the Iron Skillet. I absolutely love Mid-Pines. I could play that course and its sister course across the street, Pine Needles over and over again.

We had a choice of playing Pine Needles or Mid-Pines ($40 more for Pine Needles). The gal said Mid-Pines is every bit Pine Needles' equal, so we saved the money. Plus, there's plenty of time to get back to play Pine Needles before the 2007 Women's Open.

Thanks Eric!

I really like the summer weather so I may be there then or just after.

I really wish I had a spare 10,000 to go to TPI .

Anybody been or know of other who have attended is it awsome?

I actually LOVE AZ, NV, NM in the summer! Its the cheapest and noone is on the course. You get a great tan...just drink LOTS o' water and wear LOTS o' sunscreen. My recommendations to our Aussie buddy are Troon North (Pinnacle), Ventana Canyon (I like both the Mountain and the Canyon course) and Sedona in AZ, and Paako Ridge and Black Mesa in N.M.

This summer is Vegas/Utah! plus a couple days hiking in Bryce Canyon;)

Hey flap, tell us more about the pit.

Tom G-> tell me about your Iron Skillet memory;);)...and Pine needles too...

I've added Mid-South at 8:06 on Monday morning. I goofed when I booked my flight and got the wrong date.

    • Day 153: putted for a while using the 2 cups drill inside. Working on bead primarily. Contact was really good.
    • Day 8: 12/17/2024 Okay I took my new PPJ swing thought to the range today. I wasn't sure I was quite ready to do so, but I'm glad I did.  When I got it right it was good... really good. When I got it wrong it was a major fail. I hit lots of really ugly ones. But I didn't let that deter me. I stayed committed and focused on the PPJ and I avoided any temptation to go back to what I was doing before just so that I could "look" better at the range. I'm pretty excited about what I saw when I got it right.  I hit the 6 iron mostly (nearly all block work today). I also hit about 6 balls each with the PW, 8I, 5W and Driver. Those had varying degrees of success. I did crack one drive that let me feel and see what the changes will look like once I get fully trained.  Anyway, I'm going to go back to the mirror work for a couple of more days before bringing it back to the range. I do feel like if I can get this right my swing will improve a lot. So I think its worth the effort. I liked the way it looked on GEARs when I get it right, and I like the results I got at the range when I got it right. Now the goal is to work towards getting it right more often.
    • So I think it's that they can't just bend the shaft or hosel to get it to a new lie angle. They adjust that and it changes the weighting, so they have to then adjust all the weights to get it balanced again. I get the impression that it's a bit of an iterative process and they do it all in the US, so they're paying US labor costs to build it and make it work how it's supposed to. Whether you believe in the tech or not, I think that's a true statement.
    • Ah, the old EE in the backswing move. Chest going back and staying down doesn't help.
