OK so my new on-the-way Ping G5i Ally putter is 35". I had no other option as there were no 34" or 33" available so I had to buy it as it is. My question is though, can I remove the grip, cut it down a couple of inches and regrip it, or would that destroy it or alter it in any way?? And if it will, will it really make a difference? I don't want to spoil a brand new putter you know.

Notice that I can live with a 35" putter, my very first one was 35" and it was OK, but I just feel more comfortable in a 33" one.

You are going to get some replies that tell you to avoid this because of the change in swingweight, and the difference in feel etc, etc.

I have shortened a few putters by 2" and to tell you the truth have found no difference. It does make it a bit lighter but that is my preference anyway. And if you prefer a 33" putter you will have more confidence in it, therefore having better results.

I did this to my Odyssey. Cut from 35" to 33". I do notice a difference. The head definitely feels lighter. It does not destroy the club. You may just need to get used to it. As mentioned. You an add lead weight to the head to offset the cut.

Note that my understanding is that few companies alter the weight of their heads for different lenths. I know Scotty Cameron does.

I read that when Ping makes a putter head, the head weight is the same you find on all their different length putters. I cut and inch of my Anser, and it only made me feel more comfy with it.

YMMV, but I didn't notice any bad side effects cutting the handle of my putter down.

Cutting down my putter in the same circumstance didn't seem to change it for me either. But I do wonder about cutting down woods. If I cut down my own 3 wood by 1.5 inches, is this the same result as special ordering the same wood from a manufacturer? When I do it myself will it result in a stiffer shaft than if the company custom sizes it for me? Didn't mean to get off topic but I am too new to post my own thread. I have already improved my game by reading here for the past couple months. Thanks everyone!!

I wouldn't take the risk of cutting down a wood. A putter maybe, but not a wood.
