So I think I'm retiring my 7 year old ebay knockoff putter. I went to dicks and hit some putters for no less than 2 hours today!

I'm torn between 2 putters. The odyssey sabertooth and the odyssey white hot 1 tour.

I like the feel of both, I am leaning toward the tour because the head feels nice and heavy, but I have a problem with alignment, will a blade be the right putter for me?

Also, what size shaft you guys recommend? I am between and upright and conventional stance. The odyssey club fitter says 35 inch but I think thats a bit big. are my arms supposed to "hang" when I put with no bend in either elbow??

Thanks guys, looking forward to gaining some confidence on the greens.... maybe even stop the old 3 putting 6 out of 18 holes!

Thanks!

Jim

Putters are the most personal club in your bag. What feels good for joe might not feel good for mike. Some people prefer 90$ ebay clubs over 300$ camerons. Just putt and putt away until you find the putter thats right for you.

And for length, choose whatever you find most comfortable and best. Some people use putters with driver length shafts. I personally use a 35 inch putter, I find it better to stand upright without much backbend.

I agree. If there's another putter I'd like to have it's the Sabertooth. A real close second to my Scotty in feel IMO.

Good input everyone, thank you. Wonder why the white hot tour was not mentioned? Have you guys hit that one before?

I think Im gonna have to go back and putt some more to see which one I really want.

OH, and what do you guys think a good length would be? Do my arms need to be dead straight or would 35inch be good? Im about 6'2, 6'3.

Thanks!

As has already been stated a putter is a personal thing. The most important thing is to find the model you like the look and feel of best as well as one that fits your putting 'style'. I play a straight-to-straight putting style and because of this I have always found a center-shafted putter (face balanced) works best for me. For those who have more of an arcing putter a heel shafted putter (face balanced or toe weighted) often works best, but that's not always true to everyone. I prefer the feel of a blade, but have realized over the years that a mallet with better alignment aid really helps me get the ball started on the right line easier. Blade, mid-mallet or mallet is another personal choice based on the feel and looks you like/want. As for length, this completely depends on your putter stance more than your height. Phil Mickelson is 6' 3" and used to play a 31" putter (I think that's the right length). I believe it's Robert Garrigus who plays a 28-29" putter and he's pretty tall as well. Personally, I would purchase a putter that's more likely to be too long than one too short. Worse case scenario you simply choke up a little or have it cut to proper length later. I have made the mistake of buying too short before and adjusting to it with little success.

As for the 2 putters you mention, the Sabertooth is definitely easy to alight and has a good feel to it. I personally do not really like the look of it, plus it's not center-shafted so I have never even considered it. The White Hot 1 Tour is a good putter for someone who likes a traditional blade (especially if you can't afford a Bettinardi or Scotty). I like the aligngment aid on the top better than many blades because it's closer to the ball, but still I prefer something that gives me more confidence on my alignment (hence that I play the 2-ball).

I am 5'10" and I use a 35" putter.

My specs also, I prefer to stand upright so I like the 35" putter, I also putt left hand low and this length putter seems to fit my style. But as everyone has said, putting is the most individual part of the game, so do what works for you.

I'm 6'5" and use a 33 inch Ping. It's all about what feels right.

As for picking the putter, I'd keep shopping until 1 jumps out at you and you HAVE to have it.

I have the WHT #5 and chose the 34" (over the 35"). The 34" felt better to me because it has a few extra grams of weight on the head which helped me with distance control.

As stated before, putting is very personal. I don't really like how big the Sabertooth's head is. I just feel like I cannot make a putt with it. The White Hot Tour #1 isn't a bad putter, But I'd never use it. I hate inserted putters, they make me feel like it putting an 1800s mush-ball.

i had a sabertooth, but traded it in on a new fairway wood given I was alternating between my scotty and my 2-ball. 3's a crowd i guess. It did roll the ball extremely well and was forgiving on those where my putting stroke was a little off the mark. In the end, i putted better with the other two guys in my closet and still continue to waiver back and forth.

    • They're not, though. Visual tricks is why so many people aim right. Hold your two arms out with your thumbs up. Put the right thumb at the target. Look at how far left your left thumb feels like it's aiming, yet… it's perpendicular to the target line. Your eyes are between your feet and the ball just like they're between your two thumbs.
    • Thanks Matt! Also, does this list have a lot of diversity of layout and scenery? I'd like to see as much as possible of what the RTJ trail has to offer
    • Swing check. Cons: The countertop drill hasn't taken yet. Not crazy about A5 to A6 hand path. Pros: Decent BS width at A2 and right elbow at A4. All in all, not terrible but meh..
    • Day 74 (14 Jul 25) - Late afternoon session w/9i, magnetic alignment stick, Divot board and hard foam balls.  Worked on getting the face square at setup and then returning to same through the swing.  The lines on the Divot Board served as referenced parallels for the alignment stick.  Did hit a few balls about 30 total - half with using the alighment stick on the club face and half without.  First time working with the magnetic alignment rod - really reveals when you have the face closed/open/etc.
