Last Saturday, was playing in our weekly blitz as a captain. On the third hole (about 160 yd par 3), I air-mailed the green with an 8-iron and hit a wedge to about 5 ft. My B and C players both made their pars (two best scores count), so the hole was effectively over after my C tapped in. In the interest of not holding the group behind us up, I picked up my ball and my D's ball, since the par putts didn't count for anything. I ended up pretty much shooting a half-assed round, but I did birdie a long par 5 into the wind and ended up getting a $110 skin from it.

Once we get in the clubhouse, another captain calls me out in front of everyone for not putting the par putt. I explained to him that the putt was meaningless, and just to placate him, I changed my score on the hole to reflect a bogey and a 73 as opposed to a 72 (although it was a straight putt that I would have made 70% of the time - the only other two putts I picked up were inside three feet - par or bogey putts that didn't help the team as the hole was effectively over). He followed up his rant with, 'what did you shoot? 85?'. That pretty much set me off. I didn't say much of anything, but apologized and said I would putt everything out from now on.

Now, we have what's called the 'emergency 9', where every man puts down $30, and the best team score wins everyone else's money. I took out a new ball and wrote 'MAKE EVERY PUTT' on it, came out very focused and defiant, and ended up shooting 2-under on my own ball, and we won going away - $90 more in my pocket. My boy that was running his mouth didn't have a whole lot to say when he was handing his money over.

I need to bottle the attitude I had in the last nine (showing the haters what's up) - I feel I have been getting lazy and complacent in practice and it has showed the last few weeks, even though I have managed to luck my way into $100 paydays the two weeks prior to last Saturday. I felt like I was in high school again on that last nine - when I finished out, that was the most fun I've had playing golf all year.

You did the right thing according to the rules on picking up the ball and scoring the par. Changing your score is actually incorrect since you as supposed to score what you would reasonably think you would get if yu continued to play until you holed out.

Personally, I would ask whomever is your handicap chair to adjust your round to a 72.

Nice 9 BTW.

I'm surprised that your club doesn't mind turning in scores knowing players pick up 3 footers. I say that because I've played in a couple of different clubs that make you putt everything outside of 6 inches. Not only that, but one particular time I had a disaster hole where I was going to shoot a big number. Since I can't take more than double bogey, I picked up midway through the hole to speed up play (and to spare my fragile ego ). The handicap chair FREAKED out saying that he would post my score, but said he would NEVER do it again if he found out I did not play out every hole. I told him, "Will do," while saying to myself, "Relax dude."

In the bag:
Ping G5 Driver 9 degree, Ping G10 3-wood, Nike 3 hybrid, TaylorMade R9 Irons 4-AW, Cleveland CG15 56 and 60 degree wedges, Odyssey 2-ball blade putter

Wow, the guy sounds like a douche. Doesn't he realize there's a whole set of procedures for dealing with incomplete rounds, unfinished holes, etc, in the USGA handicap guide?
