Hey everyone, newbie here with a question:

My best friend is a playing pro with a lot of potential. He currently plays a ping G5 with the stock S-flex shaft. But, his clubhead speed is 124-130. He swings pretty smooth from the top, so tip stiff models don't really work for him. Additionally, he already hits the ball pretty low for a guy who swings that hard. I think he needs an x-flex even though he's smooth.

Agree? Disagree? why? any suggestions?

I understand that it's tough without seeing him swing, but what do you all think he should try?

Thank you so much for any input,
ty

tyko,

An x flex shaft will not help your friend's height issues.

What loft is he playing? The G5 is a high launch / spin head. Elevation at that swing speed should be a non issue.

He should probably consider taking a lesson, because players who play tip soft shafts and still have trouble elevating the ball usually have swing issues that need to be addressed in order to hit a higher ball.

Until then a good clubfitter may be able to "bandaid" it with a different shaft.

He plays the 9 degree model. I was a little vague earlier, let me clarify. He hits THIS club very high compared to most golfers, but every time he tries another pro's x-flex shaft, he tends to hit a low ball that runs through doglegs, etc. He wants something that will give him some height while playing stiffer to gain some more control over the shaft he has now.

Thank you very much.

tyko,

I'd strongly encourage your friend to take a look at the UST Pro Force V2. It's an outstanding shaft that fits a wide variety of players and can be fine tuned to the specific player's needs. It's semi tip stiff with a 4" parallel tip section that can be tipped as needed. Overall it has a discernable kick through impact, but is still stiff enough so stronger players can put the hammer down without fear of spraying the ball. Also since it's availible in so many OEM heads, he should have no problem finding one to demo before buying. I'd start with an untipped X flex and see how he feels. The 4" parallel tip section will help with a little higher ball flight. I have other reccomendations, but I'd need to know more info abou this swing and launch monitor numbers before applying.
