what is a "3+ wood?"

i've seen it on a lot of golf shops online that have "3 wood" and "3+ wood" as search options.. whats the difference?

It is a 3 wood with a strong loft . I have a 3+ wood, it is 13*

I've also seen 5+ woods that have the loft of a 4-wood. So maybe people aren't used to woods having even numbers?


Oddly, when hybrids are 3+ or 4+ (e.g., Nickent's lines), it's typically between two numbers (4+ between 3 and 4, etc). Yet with woods, it seems to mean "subtract one number."

Callaway may have started this convention, when they had their normal three wood at 15 degrees and the 3+ at 13 degrees. The Callaway design of early steelheads and warbirds made getting the ball up pretty easy, and a lot of the time a three wood off the tee flew quite high. So a 3+ wood became quite popular -- and it was still easy to get a high flighted shot.

Ping's G10 5 wood is 18.5*, but they don't call it strong.

Used to have a Taylormade Tour Launch Burner (2008) 5 wood with 17.5 degrees loft. Was basically a 4 wood. Which was too close to my 5 wood so changed it.

In fact I have found a Weak 3 (16.5) sometimes labeled 4 Wood
plays as long and much straighter than standard 3 wood.
Nearly bought the Tour Edge 4 wood....
but settled on TE 3 Wood Houdini Utility, 16 degree I think.
Great decision, for me anyways.

My 3+wood is great off the tee when the driver needs a time out.

I was recently looking for a 3 wood and settled on the Adams Speedline. The majority were 15*and had to search for a few days on Ebay until a 13* showed up. I grabbed it and I am in love with it. When I have trouble with the driver, I pull out the 3 wood and hit it very consistently to 235-245 which is just shy of the 260 I hit the driver.

On the tee box, I tee it up about a half inch off the ground and in the middle of my stance and it takes off on the same trajectory as my good driver shot.
