So is the GX-II illegal or not. I don't know which one to get, the I or II. Any other info is appreciated as well.

In any kind of tournament play, yes. For handicap (casual) rounds, it's fine (but then, why spend the money for something you can't use in any kind of tournament?).

I've thought long and hard about getting one of these devices myself but I cant push myself to pull the trigger.

None of my friends use them....and quite honestly I dont think I am good enough for it to really matter.

I look at the yardages posted on the fairways, take a look to see where the pin is positioned and that is good enough to get pin high most of the time.

Just bought the GX-I a couple of weeks ago on ebay new for $270 to my house. It has already paid off in the 3-4 rounds I have used it. Kept running into distance issues especially at unfamiliar courses. I is also great to know distance to bunkers, hazzards, or just the tree that may put you through the fairway. Since I would like to get involved in tourny's and be able to use it, I went with the legal one.

I have a CaddyLite i got off a mate for £25 (~$40?) and its so easy to use! Just a GPS one, older model, used for about 30 rounds but he got a laser one. Does 3 hazards on each hole, front middle and back of green
