I got one of my friends hooked on golf recently, and I went to the store with him today to help him pick out his first real set. He already hits it long (250 yard 3 wood is his go to shot off the tee), so that's why I picked out extra stiff shafts for him. I think we found some great deals!

Driver: used Titleist 905T 9.5, Aldila NV 85 X, $60!!
3 Wood: used Titleist 980F 15, Aldila NV 85 X, $80
Irons: used Mizuno T-Zoid Pro, DG X100, $120
Wedges: new Adams Tom Watson 52, 56, 60, DG Wedge Flex, $100
Putter: used, can't quite remember, I think it was an old TaylorMade, $30

grand total: $390!

We definitely leaned more towards traditionalist over game improvement gear, haha, but I think we got him a sweet set! What do you guys think?

Thanks.

It kind of makes me kick myself for how much I've wasted on clubs over the years, when his set is perfectly nice enough for under 400! I figure the only thing he might want to do later on if he gets picky is re-shaft the wedges with matching X100's.

Good purchase.
He will eventually want to drop the $1000 on totally brand new gear. We all started with cheap deals and thought we'd never want more but we always come back for something new.

I think the excitement of making an order for new golf clubs, the eagerness of waiting for it on your window the day it arrives and the great feel when unwrapping the new clubs is a part of the whole golf experience.

Sounds like you made the right choices for your friend overall. Not sure about the x stiff shafts, I swing stiff shafts and I hit my 3 wood 250 as well. I guess I would think 270 yard 3 wood for extra stiff, but if it works then it works. How far does he hit his driver? Also, what kind of ball is he using? Bridgestone makes some great balls for under 30 bucks. If he hits it long like you say then maybe look at the e7+.

In my White/Red/Yellow Monza Featherweight Stand Bag:

3 Wood: 07 Burner 15* stiff
5 Wood: 07 Burner 18* stiff
Irons 4-AW: r7 steel shaft stiffWedges: RAC Satin 56*, 60*Putter: Rossa Daytona 35 InchBall: Bridgestone e7+, Titleist Pro V1Shoes: D3000Glove: ...

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
