Well today was my first day of high school as a freshman. It was really fun, and I met some people, and got comfortable. The only thing wrong is that at lunch, literally nobody I know can sit with me. My friends have been spread out among 1st, 2nd, and 4th lunch, while I'm at 3rd. Most of the freshmen however behave like freshman, very immature and annoying, so making new friends will be hard if I can't find some cool friends.

What would you guys say I should do in this situation?

P.S.
The girls here are incredibly sexy, so that's a massive plus in the high school experience haha.

Find the biggest senior you can and pick a fight with him. You have to put everyone on notice that you're not to be messed with. Oh wait, we're talking school, not prison. It just felt like prison.

You won't talk to people because they're "uncool"? Great attitude. You should get to know people that are interesting and fun.

Here's a pro-tip. Everyone in high school acts like immature, annoying dorks. Especially people who judge others as immature and annoying. It's the time in your life when you can be. So embrace it. Trust me, the entire adult world is laughing at you guys. Well, the older women think you're cute...in a condescending way.

Don't worry, the social order will take its toll and you'll fit in somewhere. Maybe with the jocks, the dweebs, the dorks, the punks, the grease monkeys, the drama queers, the weirdos, the preppies, etc.

Looking back on high school, I wish that I just didn't spend any time worrying about "the social order" or anything like that. I didn't figure it out until sometime during my junior year.

Forget about "cool" or "uncool." Just do what you have to do to be successful (i.e. school work). Find yourself some other hardworking classmates and help keep each other on track. You'll make some quality friends by accident along the way. Stay away from people who will distract you from what is important or get you into trouble. If you want to sit by yourself in the cafeteria to get some work done, do it. I know that sounds insane to a 14 year-old kid ( Be the loser that sits alone in the cafeteria!?! ), but it actually demonstrates more maturity and self-confidence than anything else (i.e. that you aren't in desperate need of the approval of "the group").

Anyway, eventually people grow up and a lot of the cliques break down. Some of the girls who were "hot" turn into repugnant hussies. Some of the girls who were "dorks" turn into stunningly attractive, fine young women headed off to Ivy League universities. A few years after high school very few of the "cool kids" will rate as the most successful people from your class.

Just try to lengthen your horizon. Think about where you want to be in 5-10 years rather than getting wrapped up in the day-to-day soap opera because none of that matters in the end.

Nothing matters in the end. High School life is as meaningless as soul sucking professional life.

In 5-10 years I'd recommend to the OP to be traveling around. meeting new people, sleeping with as many women as he can and not caring about fitting into the concrete mold society wants for you. Because this is what 90% of the stiffs I work with have done. They never have interesting stories about being 25 like I do. Seriously, high school is important in some ways but it's really a terrible place. It was easy for me so I skipped a lot and did other things. Managed a 34 on my ACT and went to college a couple years after graduating. But I made sure I did a lot of other things.

Ask a girl to join you for lunch.

If she says no, ask another.

If she says yes; don't talk about yourself at lunch. Talk about her. Ask her what her interests are, ask her about her friends, ask her if she has a boyfriend. Ask for her number. Call rather than text. Take her to play golf.

Except high school only lasts 4 years. Your "soul sucking professional life" lasts a lot longer, so hopefully you can set yourself up with a career that doesn't suck so bad.

To each his own, I guess. You'd probably consider me a "stiff" but I have no regrets. So far I'm enjoying the path I've chosen, settling down and taking on a lot of responsibility at a relatively young age. I'll still have stories to tell about being 25 years old - they will just be of a different variety.

True enough.

I had so many other interests in high school I just didn't see the value in doing it seriously. Luckily it came pretty easy so I did well on the things that counted such as tests and exams. I really wouldn't promote my approach as it's easy to screw it up, lol. But I'm sort of a rebel anyways. And yeah, as long as you enjoy your life, that is all that matters. No idea if you're a stiff - I can't judge someone I've never met. And I go to the same office every day as these stiffs I reference. I just don't relate to them. I've always enjoyed computers and programming and loved college but man, the real world sucks. The people are so square and seem to only take fulfillment from their work - which is meaningless. But I tend to think they all suck pretty bad. I mean, work is work. I enjoy so many other things in life I approach work as a means to an end. At least when you're surrounded by uncreative, proletarian nits. Sorry, I'm rambling, lol. Sitting in a climate controlled office and doing as I please most of the day is better than breaking my back in the hot sun I suppose. And the pay ain't too bad. So yeah, I agree. We all have to work and it's going to suck no matter what in 99.9% of cases so try and get something that is comfortable and pays well so you can more easily do the things in life you actually enjoy. I just can't dedicate myself to something as unfullfilling as corporate America. How do you get through it? I'm serious here. I'm really looking for advice on how people go to work at such a dull place and enjoy it. I suppose if you have a family you are driven to provide for them and work "hard" to get more ends to pay for more karate lessons or something. I truly envy your approach and I wonder how is it enjoyable? I'm serious here. I'd like to know. If you have any questions for slackers like me who don't care much for their career since it seems meaningless and would rather live a life of exploration, fire away. It's pretty off topic directly to the OP but I think it is relevant because when you get a little older as we are, these are the choices you face. And you probably start finding that identity in high school except it is hard to see clearly since you have so many forces pulling you in various directions. So I also recommend to the OP to go to college and then go to more college and really spend as much time in college as possible. Also, be yourself and do whatever it is you like. Open your mind to everything except crack, meth and birthcontroll-less sex (DO NOT HAVE A KID -- THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING) and I probably wouldn't smoke much since it's pretty addictive...but I'd try it at least once. Then get a job and rot away! :P

Ha, that is a pretty ballsy move. Idk if I'd necessarily recommend it in the first week of high school lol. Just try and get a feel for the place, your going to be spending a lot of time there for the next 4 years.

Also, get to know the golf coach! and go out for the golf team! Man, I wish more than anything that I had golfed and went out for the team in high school. From talking to one of my buddies you pretty much got to play golf everyday for free! and you get the practice of competitive events.

Software engineer. If you've ever seen the movie "Office Space"...well, that's what my job is like.

It pays well, I get a lot of vacation, etc. But I think to myself sometimes, "Wow,...for the rest of my life!!!". And then I think about the millions doing the same thing (working in an office...you know, a "good job") and how they face the same predicament and I wonder how we haven't all gotten together and killed ourselves yet, lol. In fact, I get the feeling these people actually LIKE it. They get their sense of achievement from doing mundane, simple tasks poorly and getting involved in the politics of the office in hopes of getting petted by the boss. It doesn't make sense to me. I'm just there to cash a check I think sometimes. And I wonder where I went wrong and if maybe I'm just messed up. I enjoy math and computer science and that's what my degree's are in but this life...and I know it isn't any different anywhere else! At least for me it's easy and I can underachieve quite a bit and get by fine and get out of there and go do some golf, etc. It's basically the pattern I've adopted since high school. Get by easily, wise crack and go on doing what I enjoy the rest of the day. I just wonder how people derive so much value and see so much importance in their crappy little careers. I mean, a lot of these people aren't very deep or philosophical and just kind of accept things in front of them as natural. I hate to use the cliche sheep but it seems like that. Just out grazing in the pasture and living out their meaningless life devoid of thought, creativity and fulfillment and then dying with promises of going to Sugarcane Mountain. They're good people, to be sure. But they're so callous and stodgy.

Haha, that reminds me a TON of myself. I'm trying to figure out what kind of career path I want to go down that I will be able to do that. My rough plan had kind of been law school and then lawyer, but I dont know if thats going to be too much work and time. I want to be able to golf a lot :) Too bad my major sucks (Communications) and was picked with pretty much only law school in mind. I've been trying to think of other jobs that pay well (I need to upgrade my clubs after all ;)) that I wouldn't mind doing. I'm more liberal arts minded than math, but I'm not too shabby there either.

I've considered law and perhaps I'll pursue that in my life at some point. But it is A LOT of work. And after you graduate and pass the bar exam then you work super long hours reading documents and writing documents. It's a lot of work. A lot. And there aren't any guarantees. There are a lot of lawyers and the bottom end of them pretty much don't make it. So you can't just get by. Highly competitive and a field full of work-a-holics.

Actually in my field, there are a lot of people with a liberal arts degree "Management of Information Systems" which is a computer programming degree for layman and lazies. It teaches basic programming skills. It is basically office drone 101. I'd get into business if I where you. They make a lot of money and don't do much but have meetings and backstab each other all day. Communications may get you into something like Human Resources but keep in mind those people are the most despised vermin in the entire office. It may also get you a barista job at Starbucks. Maybe marketing or something... Some really good fields are hospital jobs. Doing Ultra-Sound technician work is a really good one. But you have to touch sick people so I'm out. Seriously though, our options are pretty limited. "Good jobs" are considered office jobs and those suck pretty bad too. Try and do something where you'll be around creative, interesting people. They tend to flock to things like graphic design. But they also live the soul sucking life of an office peon and try as they must to advance their unimportant career. Offices are like high school. People jumping through hoops (doing extra credit and whatever to get the teachers approval) to impress the boss (teacher) to get potentially more money or status or something(good grades, pat on the head). The problem is in an office these people put in 50% more effort to reap 5% more reward. The smart ones learn early on that to get more money you switch companies every 3-5 years. What sickens me is their obsession to this hollow goal. If we go out for a few drinks (real party animals here) they will gossip about work, etc the entire time. I've learned that bringing up interesting conversations that don't involve work, other people at work or bad TV shows that have been discussed at work is a bad idea since you upset the natural order. I tend to like to talk about the life experience, ideas or absurd things but I can't crack these peoples nuts. They love talking about work when not at work! Get an interest...please! Why aren't these people fascinated by Aerogel!?!?!?! So yeah, this is what you have to look forward to.

A lot of people will tell you "time" flies in High School. I thought that was B.S. as a freshman. But looking back on it, they were right. I am going into my senior year in about 11 days, and I really do think the time has flown by.

I wish I did more as far as school work goes, wish I was a better student and tried a little harder...that'd be my only advice. Take school seriously...you'll regret it if you don't.

But, overall high school isn't too terrible. It's better than Junior High.

I would go sit with the girls... or at least at a co-ed table. When I actually went to lunch in HS I always remember sitting with boys and girls...

Of course later on I just left school and took long lunches, cut 4th period, etc.
Ask a girl to join you for lunch.

100% untrue. I mean, if you go extreme you'll regret it because dropping out isn't an option. But I had a lot of friends that did a lot of extra credit, kissed up and did 19023802913 things to put on college applications. None of them are in a better place than me and I screwed off and did what I wanted. And I have far better stories than "I got an ulcer stressing about a meaningless class for 3 weeks my junior year!". You may be in the phase where the adults are really scaring you with bullshit right now. Trust me, you have just as good a chance to land a terrible office job as anyone else. They don't add the points up until the end.

I just finished high school in June and can tell you one thing.

You will miss it when you're done so make the most of it.

I thought this was a b.s. cliche too, but now that I'm done I know the feeling. You may never see most of the people you meet in high school ever again but you will remember them for a long time. Even the people I didn't know that well I find myself missing because we were in school together for 4 freaking years, it's hard not to miss each other when it suddenly ends and most everyone goes their separate ways to college or a job or the military or whatever.

But you still have four years to go for that so make the most of it.

College is a lot more fun and you tend to meet people interested in similar things as well as things you may have not known existed. You probably won't remember most of the people from high school or think of them again down the road. Your friends you never see again, sure.

Dude, I live exactly like you. I do the minimal work. But believe me, I still am regretting not having better grades. A 2.8 GPA ISN'T impressive at all, lol.

But, I also see what your saying...you don't want to go overboard with worrying too much. But try to do your best...don't purposely do absolutely nothing. I'm sure I'll be fine...if all else fails I can always get a job doing something in Golf, lol.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
