im currently using a 456 chrome vokey SW. 56*

i do fine around the greens and decent out of bunkers, but if i try to take a 3/4-full swing with it i either close the face and hit a draw or leave the face wide open leaving me way short of the target.

any suggestions on getting the face where it should be at impact? i dont have this problem with any of my other clubs.

dont be so handsy with your swing go straight back straight down without altering ur hand position,, ur probably flipping the club near impact

If all else fails, consider an equipment change. I am always suspicious when I find any club that I can't hit for crap ever . It has happened to me twice. One, in fact, was a 56-degree Vokey, which I was really excited to get used because, hey, it's a Vokey. But I could never find the sweet spot. No matter where the ball went, it felt like a "clank". Traded it in for a Hogan gap wedge because the rest of my set is Hogan and I hit them reasonably well. Seems to have worked.

Second time, was a Nike 3W that I couldn't get 10 feet off the ground no matter how much I adjusted my swing or ball position. Took it back to the store and swapped it out for an Adams Ovation. Problem solved.

You could try using an elastic band with a ruler shoved underneath to feel when/where your wrists are starting to break down (yes, this could be painful if you try to do it too quickly). You could also try this the 'Tac-Tic',
http://www.4golftraining.com/? I've never seen one though so I'm not entirely sure whether it works....

that is definitely a good idea. i actually went to the driving range last night to try and concentrate more on keeping my hands quiet and for the most part it seemed to work. but as we all know, for us not so great players 1 night at the range doesnt mean much as we arent the most consistant in the golf world.

Vokeys are known to have a heavier head than other wedges. Try with another brand with a lighter head. This may help your hands stay ahead of the ball?

Hitting the SW is not a hard shot but takes some getting use to and confidence. Be sure and work your shoes down into the sand some and concentrate about two inches behind the ball. The main thing about sand shots is the follow thru. The club never touches the ball, the sand blasts the ball toward the hole. Follow thru and you will get amazing results rapidly. I have never feared a SW shot. It is just that easy!

haha, i think you have the wrong thread. i dont have a problem with bunker shots. i have a problem with closing the clubface on full sw shots.

Is it possible to be not enough 'handsy' with a wedge? on anything above a half swing it feels like my right hand disappears from the swing and the heel hits and opens the face, causing a shot that squirts right.

Rusty2228,

Your swing with a sand wedge should be no different from that with a seven iron, or a three iron. All that should change is ball position and distance from the ball which is the result of swinging a shorter club. It's possible that you have a lie angle issue. However, lie angle issues aren't actually caused by the heel or toe hitting first and "digging" which leads to an open or closed face, as most people commonly believe. An improper lie angle actually physically aims the face off line and the amount offline is proportional to the loft of the club. The greater ther loft, the greater the club will be offline which is why it is just as, if not more important to get your wedges dynamically fit for loft and lie.

I think that is my problem...my swing with my sand wedge is the same as my seven iron or three iron ...I am having all sorts of problems with my irons right now...but with my wedges it just seems that the heel hits and the face opens way up...

Practice makes perfect...or at least not as god awful

ive actually started to focus on swinging parallel to my feet with my SW/PW and its really helped me keep the ball straight to a fade instead of a draw like the rest of my clubs. im really happy with the way im hitting them now. its funny how sometimes focusing on something almost completely unrelated to your problem often solves it.

Oh, sorry about that......I will have to go along with you on the SW in the fairway and around the greens. I have a hard time dealing with that much loft. I tend to hit it too straight up and get no distance. I had rather hit a regular wedge or a lob wedge than hit the sand wedge. Only time I use it is if I need to plop a shot over a bunker to a tight pin placement or hit over a tree or object right in front of me. If you blade it you are in much more trouble than you started. Keep your weight on your left side thruout the swing and be sure to hit down and thru the ball. While your doing that say a small prayer!

Don't feel bad, I've been playing for 20 years and still have hard time hitting my SW flush. I just prefer it for around the greens and chipping. Prefer my PW from 80 ft in.
