I have a theory about new clubs that has been borne out by lots of examples...

All clubs have microscopic pores in the sole of the club, put there by the manufacturers. Then at the time of manufacture, they inject a certain amount of "good results" into the body of the club. Each time you take the club out of the bag and address the ball, the sole is pointed down and a small amount of the "good results" run out through those pores. Most clubs can only store about 60 days worth of "good results", so at the end of the first 60 days of use, all the "good results" have run out onto the ground and it is time to replace those old clubs with new ones. The new ones, of course, come with a brand new batch of "good results".

All of us have come to expect that after about 60 days with new clubs, our old troubles will reappear and we have all blamed that on our inability to be consistent and make a repeatable swing or many other things. When in actual fact, it is all because of a conspiracy within the club manufacturing industry to keep us spending money... I have found that if I throw enough money at my golfing problems, I do get results, but they are short-lived. Anyone else out there noticed the same thing?

Sorry, Simon... I am not making light of your driver problems. I do feel your pain. I just couldn't resist. Along those lines, I can go to the driving range almost any time before a round and hit these pretty soaring, slightly drawn drives down to the end of our range. As soon as I get to the 1st hole, I start to swing too hard, tense up, etc. so that I couldn't hit the ball straight with a gun to my head. I have found that if I slow down my backswing intentionally to a speed where it feels like I am on the verge of sleepwalking, I can go back to hitting the ball straight.

I have asked my friends to watch my backswing when I do the slow-down thing and they always say something to the affect that my swing looks really smooth. They never say it looks like I am going very slow. Which tells me I was getting very quick and needed to slow down. You might want to try that.

Also, I just read about and started doing a drill where I grip down on my driver about halfway down the grip and hit normal drives. Shortening the club gets my tempo straightened up. Once I am hitting the driver straight like that, I slowly let the shaft out until I am hitting full drivers straight. Hope this helps.

That's true. I was wandering around a Golf Galaxy the other day and an employee was coming out of the back area. I saw on the shelf in the club restoration area (where they restore the driver for which they gave you $20 in store credit in order to sell it for $200) a bottle marked "Good Results Pellets." I ducked in and grabbed them, but didn't realize that they were supposed to go in my clubhead, so I sprinkled them on my Cheerios this morning. Now I don't want to fart or the pellets might come flying out like shrapnel.

I didn't play golf today, but my typing has been AWESOME since breakfast!

Oh, iacas... I needed that laugh this morning. Got up with an awfully stiff back and I have to tee off in a customer's tournament in an hour and a half.

I hope the shower heat loosens it up.
