The last 4-5 times I have played a round, I have done this at least once during the round. I have just started taking divot as I was more of a picker until recently. Now, at least once a round, I am getting too much of a divot to the point where the clubhead gets caught in the ground and jams my right wrist. It is brutally painful. To try and avoid this, I have tried standing away from the ball and address the ball with the toe of my clubhead, but it still seems to happen.

Any suggestions to not jam the isht out of my hand every time I go out?

You just need to work on your consistency. You just changed part of your swing and now you need to put it in muscle memory.

Personally, if I find I'm taking too big of a divot, it tends to be from moving my head down during the swing. My old clubs were off the rack and I need a 1" longer club. I had to perform some swing gymnastics to get a decent strike on the ball. Sometimes my swing would get out of tempo and I'd start taking out massive divots.

I've jammed my wrist bad doing that too. On wet courses I can be terrible with my wedge divots. I hit down on the ball hard, taking a large divot under normal circumstances. With wet ground I have taken out divots that could be confused for a small dog. Literally 2" deep and 12" long. Thankfully that hasn't happened recently.

My clubs are off the rack as well, but I also got fitted and was told that I was standard across the board. I think that what I'm doing more now with my new found swing is driving my hips forward on the downswing and maybe dipping? All the local ranges by me are all mats, so it makes it difficult to judge if I'm hitting too fat or what.

I actually prefer the softer courses. It makes it easier/less painful to take a divot out (even if it is 2" by 12" and to be honest, I've taken a few of those and the shots were spot on). I think it's the harder ones that make it painful, when I get 1/2" to and 1" deep and catches me stiff.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
