I just wanted to share my personal demons with you all.I recently read The Inner Game Of Golf by Tim Gallwey and I have read about NLP training for your mind.
My point is I am not one to blame poor technical execution for my misses.I think most bad shots come from poor mental focus. My scores on a golf course come from fear.It leads to hesitant swings particulary on wedge shots or chipping.Funnily enough this is not the case with putting which I really enjoy.
From the tee I am usually quite fearless, iron shots the same, but the possibility of an approach sometimes affects me too,not in all cases. Also I believe that breaking 100 has started to become a barrier almost even though I don't make a big deal of it or count my score while playing I just know that a string of doubles on my card is adding numbers so it's there in my mind.
I suppose writing this is purging and a healing because the worst thing is to carry on hanging onto the belief that practice and play will cure these ills, but I truly believe this is down to mental patterns established from before so it's down to me to face it and beat it.
I shot 103,102,103,102 in my last 4 rounds so I know where the confidence goes.
I am now in the process of programming myself differently mentally and if I'm honest a proper pre-shot routine,I had one before but it was all show and only generally thought about.Other mistakes I have made include rushing shots not taking time to think about proper club selection based on lie or position in the course.
I thought I was doing these things well but being honest I was doing them in a general sense. Also I allow tension to build and expect too much from myself.I have lots of self belief but this translates into control from my mind, and I need to be free to play relaxed.

Anyone have similar feelings and how did you go about tackling this? After all players average handicaps have not dropped despite advancements in technology. It must be in the mind.

Same here, when I attack the ball I make better shots. When I am hesitant I chunk the ball.

    • that is an excellent approach. I did that with my last set. I made a few 7 irons from different heads and shafts. Getting a feel for how they play on the course is the right idea. Let us know how it goes.
    • I’m glad the USGA booted some of the hecklers. It’s getting out of hand. I wish the networks wouldn’t mic the crowd to give those idiots a platform.
    • New member here, and I have decided to upgrade my clubs. I have been playing for a long time but these last 10 years I have had to put four kids through college. So I've played a few rounds a year and some years have not played at all. I am currently playing Titleist 716 AP2's with Rifle 6.5 steel shafts and Winn grips. I used to hit my 7 iron around 165 yds until just 5 years ago. I turned 62 this year and noticed I can barely get my 7 iron to 145 yds. I went for a fitting to try out some new player distance irons. I don't think I need game improvement irons because I'm pretty straight and rarely try to work a ball (if I'm working a ball, then I most definetely did something wrong to get there). I tried a bunch of irons (Callaway, Mizuno, PXG, Taylormade, Srixon, Ping, and Titleist) and I kept coming back to the Ping and Titleist. They just felt right and really looked good when lining up a shot. The Ping, by far, went the longest of all the irons. The Titleist was a close second in distance. Both felt buttery smooth through impact. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with these irons. I was getting 160 yds with a nice smooth swing (81 mph swing speed). I know I'm asking a lot of my clubs but my last fitting was 27 years ago and I ended up with some Cleveland TA3's or TA2's forged irons with Dynamic Gold S300 (swing speed 87 mph). I really love the feel of my AP2's and the place I'm going to purchase from is going to make a 7 iron in both Ping and Titleist for me to test on real grass. I'm pretty certain it's going to be either one. They're both identical in price for a set of 5-PW. I'm going to forego a 4 iron and get another 4 hybrid to go along with my 3 hybrid. Any and all replies are welcome.
    • Day 47, June 22.  After work today, I spent 20 minutes in my indoor practice room, hitting about as many balls.  Slow, as slow as I could, 6-iron swings, same priority piece as the past month.
    • Day 291 6-22 full, faster swings, focusing on low point, missing towel. Recorded some face on and dtl. Practicing full speed changes is something I wasn't doing enough.
