Here's a swing tip/thought which has helped the consistency of my game a lot. It seems that, in any discussion of swing plane, responders immediately fall into two groups. One claims that they alter their swing plane making it more horizontal as the clubs get longer. The other claims that they do not alter their swing from club to club. As you will see from this tip, both may actually be correct. It merely depends on your viewpoint.

I perceive the line running through my two shoulders at address as an approximation of the axis on which the swing plane rotates from horizontal to vertical. Consequently, if my left hand passes through an extension of this line beyond my right shoulder at address during the backswing, I should be perfectly on plane. When I practice my backswing, I visualize my left hand always passing through this point just to the right of where my right shoulder was at address. The interesting thing is that this is true for every club, from wedge to driver. But as the club gets longer and you are farther away at address, the swing plane becomes more horizontal even though left hand goes through the same point as it did with shorter clubs. Work with a mirror has convinced me that this is actually true. As I have practiced with my left hand going through this same point with all clubs, the more my swing feels the same no matter which club I am using.

So, as the first group contends, the swing plane does change from club to club, but depending on how you visualize the backswing, the swing feel may not really change, as the second group contends.

Have you read Ben Hogan's book? If not, I guess you've discovered what he has discovered 60 years ago.

Hogan tells you what the end result should be not how to actually get your body to do it. Watching someone ski and being told how to do it are not the same as actually being able to do it.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there. 
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂 
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
