Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd drop in and let you know that TomDonS and I met up for the first time and played head-to-head in the Kelly Cup. Note that this is a long post as it details our match which was played yesterday in Fernley, Nevada.

The Kelly Cup is a Ryder Cup style match between the Golf Club @ Fernley and the Golf Club @ Fallon. It's played over two days with the first day being two nine hole team matches and the second day being twenty eight individual matches. The winner receives possession of the Kelly Cup for the next year.

Intro out of the way, I'd never played with TomDonS before and knew he was a great player going in as he's won several Northern Nevada Golf Association tournaments and from reading his posts on here. Basically, I knew I was the underdog...the only thing I had going for me was we were playing our individual match at my home course.

First match was won by them on the last hole since my partner and I both couldn't get up and down for par. Second match nothing really interesting happened and we ended up winning it though I forget what the final outcome was. At the end of the first day Fallon is up 16 - 12.

Second day comes...and so does the cold. Below is a hole by hole breakdown of our match from what I can recall. I'll let TomDonS chime in with details I may have missed or embellished upon

Hole 1 - 416 yard Par 4
Since Fallon has the lead, they get honors. Tom steps up and knocks it right down the fairway and a long ways out...just right of center. I step up and knock it down the middle about 30 yards behind him.
I hit wedge short and right of the pin just in the fringe about 40 feet away. Tom knocks his wedge on the green but just outside of me.
Tom hits hit putt up to about 3 feet and I let him mark it. I chip to about 2 feet and he concedes at which point I give him his putt.
All Square

Hole 2 - 244 yard Par 3
Tom hits his tee shot into the left bunker. I flat out top one that leaves me a half lob wedge in.
I knock the lob wedge over the green just into the rough. Tom hits his sand shot a bit fat and comes up short in the fringe.
Tom chips up to about 3 feet. I chip to about 5 feet past the pin (trying to hole it again...wtf am I thinking?!)
I knock my putt in and concede his putt.
All Square

Hole 3 - 296 yard Par 4
Little gamesmanship here that I'm not sure worked, but I pulled out an iron on the tee here making it look like I was going to layup. Tom pulls 3 wood and promptly hits the crap out of it into the front right trap. I go back to the bag and grab driver and knock it on the green about 45 feet from the flag.
Tom hits his sand shot a lot better than the last but still not that great to about 20 feet. I almost hole out my putt and walk away with a conceded birdie. Tom misses his birdie on the high side.

Hole 4 - 522 yard Par 5
I hit the best drive of the weekend for me right down the center of the fairway. Tom hits his a little clanky so it didn't have as much distance and it somehow doesn't bounce left off of the mounding on the right of the fairway and just stays in the right rough.
Tom hits hybrid just in front of the green. I shank a 6 iron to just outside of him in front of the green.
I chip to about a foot which is then conceded. Tom chips up to about 6 feet and I am tight lipped. He just misses the putt on the high side again.

Hole 5 - 343 yard Par 4
I step up and hit 4 iron right up the middle. Tom hits hybrid just short of me in the middle.
Tom hits his wedge approach fat but leaves it in the fairway. I hit mine just how I want but had the wrong mileage and come up short in the fringe. Tom chips up to about a foot and I concede. I putt way too aggressively and I have to putt a 5 or 6 footer coming back. I drain it.

Hole 6 - 374 yard Par 4
I hit driver up the right side with a bit of a draw. Tom does the same.
Tom hits his wedge to about 8 feet. I hit it to about 10 feet.
We both miss and tap in for pars.

Hole 7 - 168 yard Par 3
Playing into the wind I hit a 7 iron...should have hit six. Lucky that I get it into the rough instead of the bunker. Tom hits it pin high about 15 feet. I chip way too hard again and am left with about 10 feet coming back. I miss but let him hit a putt. He lags it up within tap in range and I concede.

Hole 8 - 502 yard Par 5
Tom steps up and just kills driver right up the gut. Even gave it a bit of a twirl after the follow through. I step up and hit it right after his! I hit my second with a nine iron (!) to about 20 feet pin high right. Tom over cooked a draw a bit and ended up on the back left of the green with a front right pin. Tom hits his putt but seemingly misread it and leaves it way high and about 7 feet. I knock mine to within tap in range and get conceded the birdie. He just misses his birdie putt coming back.

Hole 9 - 614 yard Par 5
I step up and hit what I think is a big tee shot up the left side of the fairway. Tom then flys my ball by about 30 yards but it's just in the rough. I hit a crappy three iron up the fairway to later find it behind a clump of grass in the right rough. Tom kills an iron (not sure what) and ends up right next to a tree after getting a huge bounce. I'm away and I hit 9 iron to about a foot. Tom has to take a swing at it and does so, but only advances the ball about 30 yards, at which point he concedes the hole.

Hole 10 - 382 yard Par 4
I hit driver up the middle as does Tom. I hit wedge poorly and leave it short and left for what should be an easy up and down. Tom knocks it to the back of the green with his wedge. He's away and lags it up there to where I concede his par. I chip it and run it by again another 6 feet, though I miss this one.

Hole 11 - 160 yard Par 3
This is where lady luck started to show up on my side and not so much on Toms...Tom hits his tee shot just as a gust of wind kicked up and he ended up short in the bunker. I got up and hit a 7 iron crappy but on the green about 25 feet.
Tom gets up to the bunker and there is a ginormous rock underneath it. He attempts to get out but the rock just scratches the hell out of his wedge and probably the ball which goes sailing OB. He then concedes.

Hole 12 - 473 yard Par 5
I step up and just about cold top another 3 iron but it somehow stays in bounds. Tom steps up and hits a driver on this very difficult driving hole but puts it right in the middle of the fairway. After taking relief from the cart path I punch a 5 iron a little too good and it almost goes OB again. Tom hits his second which find the greenside sand trap. I hit my wedge on the green about 20 feet from the flag. Tom knock his out of the sand about 30 feet past the hole. He then mis-reads the green and knocks his putt hole high but well right of the cup. I hit my putt to within gimmie range and concede his also.

Hole 13 - 426 yard Par 4
I hit driver decent up the middle of the fairway. Tom flys me by another 30 yards in the middle of the fairway. I hit 9 iron to the back edge of the green. Tom hits his to about 15 feet. I hit my putt and it just lips out. Tom knocks his up to tap in range.
underparnv 3 up

Hole 14 - 161 yard Par 3
I hit a crappy nine iron that gets a great bounce toward the green and ends up just in the fringe. Tom hits his to about 8 feet. I putt from the fringe and knock it 6 feet past. Tom just misses his birdie bid and I concede his par. I then miss the comebacker.

Hole 15 - 549 yard Par 5
First off, this hole normally doesn't play with OB down the right side in big events (like NNGA for example) but for men's club events it is in play. Tom wasn't aware of that. He hit his first tee ball exactly where he wanted to, even gave it another twirl, but it was obvious that it wasn't going to be in bounds and my partner told him as such. I hit a crappy drive that doesn't make the fairway in the right gravel. He knocks the provisional a mile but still down the right. I knock a 4 iron into the fairway about 80 yards out. Tom knocks his from about 220 right over the stick and ends up about 15 past the hole. I hit a so-so wedge to about 10 feet. Tom knocks his putt to tap in range for a great bogey. I hit my birdie putt to within gimmie range and he concedes.
underparnv 3 up

Hole 16 - 164 yard Par 3
I miss badly with a 6 iron I was trying to keep below the wind, but it rolls up to the green and stops pin high about 15 feet left of the pin. Tom hits a towering iron shot that draws just a bit too much and leaves himself 25 feet on about the same line as me. He just misses his putt and concedes the match.
underparnv wins 4 and 2

Overall it was a great match and I'm really happy that I was able to get the better of him...even if it was mostly lady luck being on my side. He's requested a rematch for next year, and I plan on giving him another run for his money!

Thanks for letting me share!

Bah...knew I would screw up something. That means I missed a hole I won on the back 9 then.. Oh well..same story...

I still think you are actually the better player and got a bit unlucky. That with the combination of you inability to read the greens = my win. Any other day, you probably at least halve the match. I'm looking forward to playing again! Probably not this Sunday, but sometime soon!

Well none the less Yesterday you were the better, and I didn't lose you beat me. Enough said. You putted SOLID as you warned me you would. And my inability to read the greens and score from some compromised positions are parts of the game and how momentum and luck good or bad can swing. That's why it's the best game out there. I will play with or against you anytime, you were a joy to play with and a TRUE sportsman. A Fallon/ Fernley tie? I can't think of a better outcome for 2 great teams of great guys.

Ends up I can't play Sunday anyway, my wife is hosting some.......... brunch for ..........some uhh girl....thing. yeah. I'm just gonna stay out of the way with the kids.

Thanks for the writeup, was a pleasure to read!

It was way more fun to play in the match than to read about it...
