handycap question

so i really am confused. i figured you could only bring your hcp down by entering scores below it (i know about course rating but for the sake of argument lets just say below it)
the course rating its 74.4 and i put in a 78 how does that end up bringing my hcp down from 1.4 to 1.3?

I'm sure you just kicked out a higher differential (one of the best 10 out of your last 20) which resulted in a lower handicap.
Your new handicap is the average of the best 10 out of the last 20 scores (differentials) multiplied by 96%. So your latest score (differential) doesn't have to be less than your cap for your cap to go down...as long as it replaced a higher differential.
