I have been playing for about a year and a half now and in the recent months my game has just started coming together. I started out the year with the goal of breaking 90 and then hopefully staying consistent in the low 90's. I carded a few 90's and one day i shot in the 80's and kept pretty consistent in the mid 80's. With only 4 hours of sleep the night before, I went out with my golfing buddies and at the turn realized that I was 1 over. The pressure was on to keep it in the 70's. For full disclosure, the course i played was a par 70. At the end of the day i had 9 bogeys, 7 pars, and 2 birdies. Ironically enough I shot a 103 the week before and was ready to swear off golf! My golf goals for this year have exceeded my highest expectations. Now hopefully I can just keep carding low rounds.

Congratulation on shooting in the 70's so quickly, most golfers take much longer to accompolish this feat. If you are not already doing this, keep your stats during the round, this has helped my game.

1) putts per hole and round
2) up and downs so that you one putt
3) greens hit on regulations
4) fairways hit

The most important is putting and up and down percentage. This will help you see what aspect of your game needs improvement to keep the low scores consistent.

Putts under 30 per round and up and down percentage of 60 - 80%. what I have found is that up and down around the green leads to your one putts.

Practice from the hole backwards. If possible hook up and play with better golfers and your learning curve will accelerate.

Wow!! That's great. Just yesterday I shot a 49,49. That was the first time I broke 100, so I kinda know how your feeling. If I can just get my iron play down, I think I can do much better. I am happy with the distance I am getting when I connect solid, but my miss hit is really FAT. This causes the ball to travel less than 100 yards no matter what club I am using. It really stinks when I am more than 150 away because the follow up shot is no guarantee to get on the green either.

Good job. @ 7 over you would have broken 80 on a regular par 72. Keep up the good work.

Congrats! I am still working on breaking 90... I don't play enough but am hoping to break 90 before the ski season starts and I put down my clubs. Ugh, too many hobbies!

I love playing with better golfers. Last round, my partner and I were partnered with another pair that were better than us (off the tee anyways) and played back tees and watching them send both their dirves down the fairway must have rubbed off on me because I found mostly fairways that round. Also, in your list, you really don't need to mark 2 and 3, marking 1 would give you the rest of the information combined with the score for that hole. I haven't been noting fairways, I should do that...

Congrats. Keep up the good playing. Once you break a barrier you realize it's not as hard as you once thought and you can do it again more easily. There is a good lesson to be learned from your story. You did not know how well you were doing until the turn, then the pressure was on. What if you don't even think about how good or bad you do until you get done with #18. Just go play the course one hole at a time, write down a number, then add them up when you are finished. No matter what you end up shooting, you will have more fun, and I will bet the farm you will probably play better. It's hard, but try it.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
