The Cleveland CG14 wedges can be had now for $89. I am considering buying one, but am wondering whether I would be better off waiting because of the groove rule change and new wedges might leave the CG14 quickly obsolete. Is this wedge likely to stand the test of time?

The Cleveland wedges for $89 aren't that great of a deal. Look around and you can get premium wedges brand new for like $60-70. The new rule changes won't be a problem for most people.

I don't think the new wedge rule will effect the price of old wedges as for the common guy You(unless you are are pro) can play the high spin wedges till 2024, so there may even be a rush on buy the current stock before the low spin wedges come out in 2010.

Just forget everything you think you know about grooves and spin. Neither you (nor I) consistently hit the wedges good enough to get maximum spin anyway. Far more than groove design is at work here. The ball is a HUGE part of the equation too. But technique trumps grooves and the ball of choice in my opinion. You will play with what they make and sell (just like me).

Now focus...

Go get a wedge set you like and can hit well. Look for feel. Remember, these are scoring clubs. About 4 months back I got a brand new set of Cleveland 588 DSG wedges (52, 56, & 60) in gunmetal finish for $209. Bought them from a golf shop (Maple Leaf) on Ebay and had them in my hands 5 days later. Best wedges I have used, easy to hit, tons of feel, etc.. Fantastic wedges and I recommend them to anyone looking for a high quality set. Link below...

Just bought 2 new TM Rac Chrome wedges 3 weeks ago 52 degree and 56 degree.. I agree there is no magical wedge out there. Find some clubs that you feel comfortable with and like the looks of at approach.

Going from my ping zing knock of sand wedge to these was a dream... I think mainly my confidence with the new club went up the the low MOI and great feel help immensly.
