I ordered some used MP-57's off Ebay and will be receiving them soon. The are standard length/lie and come with DGS300 shafts. I am fine with leaving these shafts on the club since, from everything I've read, they probably fit my swing pretty well anyway (based on tempo and SS). I do, however, want a custom fit lie and length. I've found a local golf store that has offered to adjust lie/length in the 3-PW for about $40. If they can't salvage the grips, there would be an additional charge for that, of course. The guy at this store is pretty young and, while I know he has done fittings before, I am still concerned about his experience level. Is customizing the length and lie pretty straightforward? Is there anything that I need to ask him to gauge his knowledge? What should I be watching out for? I know that it is pretty important that the grip be aligned correctly. Is this something that most people do by eye, or do they use a laser for this?

For what you're talking about, I'd expect them to measure you from wrist to floor and hit off a lie board. If you're getting fitted for new clubs, there's a lot more involved than that. Unless you're tall, the standard length will probably be fine. They should easily be able to bend the lie.

Thanks. I'm 5'8" so if anything I might have a 1/2" taken off.

They may stick with standard. I'm 5'9" and use standard. Good thing is taking off is easier than adding.

I'm 6 feet and sixteen years old but I have really long arms. It's pretty straightforward though, you should be good with this guy. If you have no faith in what he's doing though, go to someone else. If you're serious about your game, I'd recommend getting fit from ground up. But, eh.

I'd go with someone I had no doubts about...get recomendations!

You are talking about cutting off your shaft length. This can stiffen the club(you may want this, you may not). Really knowledgable fitters know how to do this while maintaing the desired flex. I'd also not want just anyone bending my sticks. Grip alignment is a piece of cake...any average hacker can do this with ease...saving them Initially, though, is a different matter.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
