I've heard the Project X's are more accurate but don't go as far as the S300's? Anyone else experience this?

i got fitted for my AP2's about 3 months ago. i found the projectx shaft balloned the ball, werent as long and felt like boards. got alot more feel, lower trajectory and distance out of the DG's.
get fitted pick what you feel is right.

Ok thank you for that useful bit of information. I wouldn't trust the opinion of a 13 handicap playing project x 6.0's anyway...

I prefer the S300 myself. ->

That's what I have now. Played a round with the Project X's and found that they didn't go as far as my s300's. Thanks.

PX's will have a tighter dispersion than DG's. Although, if one spines the DG's that will tighten up the dispersion a lot. I've experienced that the PX's are a half to whole club longer than DG's. DG's put more spin on the ball which detracts from distance, but mid and long irons will hold on the green better than PX's. PX's will generally play a half flex stronger than stated.

So, in the end, if money is not object, it depends on what you want out of your irons and the feel you like. PX's are firmer feeling than DG's, IMO. Again, IMO, many ppl play too stiff of a shaft in their irons. I have PX 5.0 and really like them. (my ss on 5i is 85 mph).

Three months ago I bought Callaway X-forged irons with ProjectX 5.5 shafts, which were recommended by a Callaway fitter at a demo day. After a couple weeks I replaced them with S300's at a more sophisticated (launch monitor-based) Callaway fitting session. The PX's were lighter but stiffer, so I felt like I had to rip them to get the same feel from the S300's, which is what I had been playing the past few years with my old clubs. I think I hit the PX's a bit further than the S300's, but the combination of lighter/stiffer resulted in me getting pretty quick at the top and losing shots right and left. And the feel was just not right for me.

I'm much happier with the S300's, much tighter dispersion pattern. My 6i swing speed is 80-85. But I have a buddy who had the exact opposite experience, replaced S300's with PX 6.0's and loves them. He has a bit higher swing speed than I.

BTW, Callaway was cool about replacing the shafts, even after two weeks of playing with the PX's. No cost, but I did have to give them the irons and go without for a few days, because the irons were also custom-sized/bent. The Callaway fitter said it's pretty common for guys to try the PX's and then go back to S300's.

While I agree that lobsterzilla's post wasn't exactly helpful, that isn't the most mature stance to take....

i am the one who change from S300 to project X, but i picked the PX 5.5, it is higher but not ballooning, coz i just want to go easy and smooth out my swing, my 6 iron goes 185 yards, half club shorter than s300, but i got more accuracy, love it!

try both side by side if u can, coz u never know which one suit u the most.

heh the response "no" was apparentally too short so unfortunately i had to lengthen it.

and when did shaft flex start correlating with handicap ? As a 3 i feel like you could have done this research on your own while we're slinging mud...

The argument that the PX shafts are to stiff and feel like boards does not make sense... Seeing how you can change the stiffness by .5 I do not see how someone could say it is to stiff when they can change it from a 5.5 to a 5.0. The PX shafts are a little stiffer than the DG. Normally a good standard is 5.5 equals DG S300.

In the end it is what you prefer... I do not play anything other than PX shafts that are pured because I can feel them... I really can feel the difference in my wedges, the DG S300's are to light for me...

i used to swing S300 and they were great. i was curious to the stepless shaft though, tried them, and loved them right away. i prefer a low trajectery, idk why, but i can hit high if i need to. it's just personal preference on to how a shaft feels to you and how it performs. there is no "better shaft out there", just whatever fits into your game and gets the job done.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
