Lately I have noticed that I have lost a about 10-15 yards in distance with my irons. With the season for me almost being over Im not going to try to correct it now but I wanted to get a little advice as far as what might be causing it. Before the yardage loss my 8 iron distance was 150-160. Now its probably about 135-145. I havent really went through a swing change this year but I have been using a slightly stronger grip. I wouldnt really worry about it but I would like to get as much distance as I can and its bothering me that I coming up that much shorter than I was before particularly with my wedges. I played a round Saturday and was 75 yards out. Before I was able to hit my sw 100 yds with a full swing. Saturday I hit my sw 70 yards with a full swing. Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing? By the way, I have only had the irons in my sig for a couple of weeks. The distances I am referring to above are with my original set of irons.

Could you have a reverse pivot?

I used to have one and when I fixed it I gained like 20 yards

possibly. What exactly is a reverse pivot?

one easy way to find out, whether it is you or the new irons, assuming you still have your old irons, is to hit an old iron for comparison... does colder weather play a role here? cooler balls fly less and extra clothing inhibits flexibility... stronger grip...before or after the new irons?

It's where you don't shift your weight correctly.

You keep most of your weight on your left side instead of shifting it to the right side and then moving back again.

You must have misunderstood me. I noticed the distance change before I bought the new irons. All Of the distances are with my old irons. As for the weather, I noticed the distance change mid summer. I started using a stronger grip mid summer as well with my old irons.

I think you might have hit the nail on the head. A playing partner mentioned to me this year that instead of rotating on my backswing I was lifting up. So after correcting that I must not be rotating enough or shifting my weight. I think its time for some lessons. Its starting to get frustating correcting one thing and screwing up another.

Any of your friends have a tennis racquet?

Over the summer I played a couple of games of tennis and you shift your weight to either side in a tennis stroke. Worked great for me. glad I could help

Dude,

Cold doesn't make a 20-30 yard difference.

I did say he had new clubs as well, plus he said he has a 10-15 yard yardage change. Sure cold weather will effect a golf ball 15 yards...

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
