London, England (CNN) — Research teams at the Danish Golf Union have discovered it takes between 100 to 1,000 years for a golf ball to decompose naturally. A startling fact when it is also estimated 300 million balls are lost or discarded in the United States alone, every year. It seems the simple plastic golf ball is increasingly becoming a major litter problem. The scale of the dilemma was underlined recently in Scotland, where scientists — who scoured the watery depths in a submarine hoping to discover evidence of the prehistoric Loch Ness monster — were surprised to find hundreds of thousands of golf balls lining the bed of the loch. It is thought tourists and locals have used the loch as an alternative driving range for many years… Local government ministers in Scotland have also complained about the level of golf ball littering… “From the moon to the bottom of Loch Ness, golf balls are humanity’s signature litter in the most inaccessible locations.”

That's awesome - I would buy a couple dozen balls recovered from the bottom of Loch Ness. Based on the decomposition rate, they should be in relatively good shape! This is good news - where can I get them? Ebay?

I really don't care if there are golf balls throughout the woods and waters. Does it take into account how many people find and play used balls, dive for them, and sells them. Used golf balls are big business.

I think there might be a few hundred in my woods from me hitting them there. I find a ton of balls walking. I think the deer like them. They told me.

hah, i think so too. plus the snakes around here have fun mistaking golf balls for rabbit tails and the deer say they add some beauty to the outdoors. i'm just preaching what the animal kingdom tells me...

I quit going into the field behind my house to get my shag balls after I ran onto a den of copperheads. So, I guess I have contributed about 200 or so balls to our decaying environment..... not including what I've lost on the course.

Haha I must be the worst litter bug...when I caddie and find balls, if it is not a Pro V1/x, Tour i/iX, TP red/black, I just drop em, no use for me to weigh my pockets down. In the last 6 months alone, I have found over 500 premium balls. And thrown back at least 500 crappy ones.
