I have a Callaway ERC Fusion driver, 11 degrees, system 55 regular flex and I cannot find a fairway if my life depended on it. In fact, in recent rounds I have left the driver in the car so I could add an extra wedge. But I need the distance from a driver and I'm looking for a new one. Looking to spend around 300 dollars, 400 tops. I've been looking at the Cleveland Hi-bore, the R7 425/460, Ping G5, but I was looking for advice on other options, or what all of you other high handicappers are hitting.

The Cleveland Hibore is the only driver that I have ever hit that never slices (for me at least). Even when I get a little behind the ball it still goes fairly straight. The Hibore is designed to put less spin on the ball, both vertically and horizontally.

Of course, these are my opinions. The best thing you can do it try one. I also found that the R7 460 and the Nike SQ had about the same ball flight trajectory as the Hibore. All three are great clubs for a mid handicap player.

I'm not sure what your handicap is, but as a high handicapper myself, I can say that the R7 425 has been a godsend for me. It is configured at 'slight draw', and I must say that I have been hitting a lot of fairways. I still miss my share of fairways, but what I have noticed is that my misses are less extreme. The "two-fairways" over slices are just not there now.

I moved to the R7 425 from a R5 driver. What I have lost is distance. I am about 10-15 yards shorter with the R7. But, I'll take straighter balls over distance any day - well almost always. I never did try the R7 460, given that it was closest in size to my old R5. As you can tell, I was not fitted for it.

Hope that helps.

first of all, once you decide what you want to buy, i suggest you go to a local store that sells used clubs. a lot of times they're in great shape (especially drivers) and are a lot cheaper.

im pretty sure the cleveland hi-bore is the one with offset? if so, my friend uses that and he used to be a slicer but now the closest he gets to a slice is a nice powerfade. i would also look into the callaway ft-3. although i personally dont like the sound, i know a lot of people whove started using it and a heel weighted one would definitely help promote more of a draw in your ball flight. just try to demo as many clubs as you can before buying anything. im currently hunting for a new driver as well and its taking me quite some time to decide.

If you want to hear from high handicappers then I'll chime in. Two weeks ago I bought an R7 460. I've been to the range and I played 18 this past Sunday (at The Neuse in Clayton, NC). My ball flight with my driver has always been mostly left to right. I set the 460 up for a draw bias and the ball goes pretty straight for me. In fact, I missed a handful of fairways left because my alignment habits have be compensating for the fade. So if you are going to go out and try a driver, give the R7 460 a try, I really like mine. Two of my friends hit it on Sunday as well. They were very impressed including one friend that loves his R7 Quad.

I was using an ERC Fusion driver of ten degrees loft until a few weeks ago, and I can say ERC's put a great deal of spin on the ball for a driver. If you are not putting a perfect perpendicular (to the ground) spin than it will slice or hook, and with all the spin the ERC puts on it that makes for an unforgiving club to hit for sure! My ERC had a ProForce shaft, but I have heard the stock RCH shafts on the Fusions are quite whippy, and maybe the club is getting behind your hands because of that if you have a quick swing.

I personally glommed onto an R5 8.5 degree and I get a big kick out of it, really hits the ball far and almost feels like its on an oiled track when I swing it it's so smooth. Big metallic noise when you connect too. I got the Neutral one, but a Draw I hear is pretty good if you are slicer. However, if I was going that route I would get an R7 because you can actually tweak the weights and as your swing gets better, you can adjust the club's bias to evolve with you. I would never get a club that has a built-in bias unless I was sure I was keeping the same swing for a couple of years, and no way am I that consistent! Since you're used to looking at a 360cc ERC at address, I would say give a smaller-volume R7 425 a shot (no pun intended!).

Hey thanks for all the advice. Im planning on a day long trip to a pro shop this Saturday to do a lot of demoing. I was just curious if getting an R7 quad, or the R7 quad ht to save the extra 150 dollars, or is the R7 425 that much better?

Cody (Thrash13) is going to be selling a brand new HiBore, 9.5 degrees, stock stiff shaft, etc. I had trouble (in my review) with the club going left, and as the first guy says, it doesn't slice for him.

It may be worth the investment. Worst case, you can probably trade it in for another driver with minimal loss.

i sell golf clubs and the club that we have been selling the crap out of is the Tour Edge QL driver with the offset it is a really cheap driver (under $180) but it is really a great quality club... Ping also makes the G5 in an offset model as well and i have found that that club works well too... good luck

    • Day 244 (3 Jan 24) - Friday men’s group round - a really solid front nine at one over 37 from the gold tees. Out of the 8 pars - six were up and downs…the lone bogie included a water ball penalty stroke.  At the turn, game shifted to my typical reality as it was a 45 with open and close dbls on 10 and 18, with five bogies and two pars strewn in between. Still a solid 82 overall - with 28 total putts (incl one 3 putt) 5 GIR and 5 nGIR.   Oh the highlight of the day - the ladies’ teaching pro was in our foursome and she was very complimentary of my overall approach and wedge game.  It made those drills in the backyard well worth the time spent.
