Grip Question

Hey everyone, just a question about the grip.

When gripping the club, do you have the club pretty secured in your hand where it wont move much and the shaft isn't visible, but with a soft grip OR do you have it in your hands to where it's a soft grip but you can see some of the club between the thumb (left hand) and the underside of the right hand (at tips of right fingers) because of the weak or soft grip?( for right hand golfers)

I ask because there are days where I'm hitting the ball very good and there are days where I'm off and on and then mostly off and am wondering if that's because I'm doing the 2nd option I listed, which is creating a weak grip that also causes me to hit fat, slide and/or hook.

The grip is realy the first step to hitting decent shots,without a decent grip the rest is insignificant.May I surgest you get hold of a decent book,Hogans" 5 lessons " explians the grip in some detail.
Basically when addressing the ball you should when looking down see2-2 1/2 knuckels of you left hand,the "v's" of your thumbs should point to your right shoulder..Pressure should be as if you are holding atube of toothpaste with the lid off but dont want any to come out.
As I said at the begining get a decent book or better still have a few lessons,it will be worth it!

Just to clarify, when you say "weak grip" you are referring to the position of the hands, not grip pressure, right? Maybe I read it wrong, but it sounds like you are using "soft" grip and "weak" grip interchangeably, which would be confusing.

The advice from the guy in england is correct...ya gotta get the grip down before moving on. reading your question is a bit hard to understand as you (not Mr Eagle) are mixing up the terminology of "weak" or "soft". Weak (or strong) usually refers to the position of the hands whereas grip "pressure" indicates how tightly u r holding the club.

I'm a bit old school in that I was taught you shouldn't see any grip through your fingers. Your comment that you can see grip from the underside of your right hand is really weird.

To me a core principle is that the hands must face each other like you are clapping. If one hand is turned to the right and the other is on top turned to the left your hands are in conflict and you will never be able to properly hinge your wrists. From there, whether you choose to go strong or weak is personal preference but you can't mix em up.

Like the other guy said the Hogan book is excellent also Arnold Palmer is generally considered to have one of the most natural grips ever. ck him out.

Hogan's book has an entire chapter devoted to grip - pages 18 to 36. The chapter includes diagrams and several mastery drills to make the grip automatic. If you are tinkering with your grip every time you address the ball, it messes up your focus.

Once you get your swing grooved, you may need to adjust Hogan's basic grip position.
