Companies have truckloads of unpopular clubs they need to get rid of somehow. Besides with "stong" and "weak" 3 woods and 5 woods (I have 5-woods ranging from 18* to 21*) some people probably already play a 4 wood - it just has a 3 or 5 stamped on it.

If I wanted to carry only one fairway wood, and I didn't already have 3 woods and 5 woods that do a great job, I would definitely consider getting a 4 wood. But I do, so I won't.

As discussed before, I played for years carrying a 3 wood and 7 wood, and while now I have and carry hybrids, they have not come close to the utility, accuracy, and length of my old woods. I loved the idea of flying a 7 wood 225 yards over trouble and stipping it on green on a dime -- can't hit that shot with my my hibrids.

I carry a 5 wood PING G5 but never hit it. I use a choked 3wood and/or a muscled up 19 deg hybrid to fill the distance gap as this is not ideal I am in the market for a 17 or 16 deg hybrid. I think tis will smooth out this area of my game.

yea i may start hitting choke 3 woods but we'll see. I definitely don't have a draw problem. my misses are always bleeding fades which might be helped by a slight upright bend. maybe I'll get a new shaft in the hybrid, get it bent, try it out and then sell it if i'm still displeased

I played with a PW/UW/SW/LW setup in my G10s and found that the only time I seemed to pull the Gap wedge out was when I needed a 110 yd shot (+/- 5) but for nothing else, so when I built the bag I'm currently playing I dropped the UW and went PW 46*/SW 52*/ LW 58* or say staggered the wedges 6* rather than 4* each. This has worked much better because I did add the 2h in the slot of the UW.(My HI will start coming down soon, I found a fix for my putting problem) This seems to be a much more playable combination since I only tend to use two clubs for most of my short work. I also seemed to have a large gap from 3i/3h slot to the 3W, and from time to time no real good way to cover the 220y. shots. Which for some reason is where I quite often seem to find myself needing to hit a shot. I notice that you are in Fla. and the irons may be the better choice for you for the breezy conditions there.

Well I decided to go the route you did with a PW (46), UW (52) and LW (58)...see my sig...however, now I am not sure if I want a 2hy...despite what i said in an earlier post I am thinking about going with a 2 iron versus a 5w or 2hy...sounds crazy but I really like swining irons (even long irons) much better then anything that resembles a wood. I have owned quite a few hybrids over the last two years and never really liked any of them (performance wise) and I think I just went that route because that is what is popular...well I need to do what works best for my swing and game...as an example a guy I was working on my swing with last year, one time showed up with an old Wilson Blade 1 iron in his bag...I asked if I could hit it and he said "You can try"...I proceeded to stripe everyone right in the middle of the club face...he gained a new perspective of my abilities to hit long irons and since then he has guided me toward having at least a three iron in my bag.

What dou you all think about hitting a 2 iron? Crazy?

Not crazy at all. There's no law that says you gotta "game" the 2i every time out. I'm as big a proponent of long irons as anyone here, but I often leave the 2-iron out of the bag.

Whether I use bring it depends on the course and the weather - my other options include a 19*h, a 19* 5w, a 21* 5w, and a mis-matched 2-iron (Apex channelback - feels like hitting a 4 iron with the distance of a 4 wood). Get a 2 or even a 1 - practice with it. Use it during a practice round. Even if you leave it out, you'll be more confident with your 3 through 6.
