Ok well I'm working on several things here, better posture, rolling forearms and stop the flip at the bottom. As the video shows there still is a flip at the bottom that I just can't stop. I hit the ball extremely high as in this video you can't see it but my ball rockets to the top of the dome. Any and all comments will be greatly appreciated, thanks for looking.

I like the swing. A lot better than most swings you'll see on this thread. Maybe a little slower on the take away. Plus, if you stop the vid at impact it looks like your standing up versus getting left. The wrist thing, Im sure some prople might say you have a strong left hand and a weak right (I do the same). Not sure it needs fixed though....

Pretty solid swing. Good tempo. Were were you aming at, though? It looked from the video that you were aligned off to the right on that white pole in front of you but it seemed you were looking at the flag way to the left of it. But it could have been just the angle of the camera shot misleading me.

I would say that the biggest thing would be the top of the backswing. You let the club "droop" a bit here, and it comes down nearly to your neck. As a result, the wrists are too active, and the club whips around your body, and flips at the bottom. This causes the really high ball that you mention.

Just looking at the video, it appears that you make the right moves, but the control of the swing is more in the arms and wrists, and less in the stronger core muscles. You want the wrists to be quieter, and let the core drive the club. This will allow you to be more solid and will bring the flight down a touch. The swing you have now will be extremely solid on some days, but inconsistent on others. Using the core is much more consistent.

I take some time now and then, and tee some balls up, grab a FW wood with a weak shaft (I have a few I practice with, they're good tools), then just turn my shoulders. I make absolute sure to keep my arms totally passive. If this feels foreign, I know my wrists have become too involved again. I need to make sure to feel that good "snap" at the bottom of the swing that comes from totally relaxed wrists releasing the club properly. When it's done right, the ball should merely be picked off the tee, and you should feel as if you never actually swung at it, but almost like you merely turned your shoulders, and you should feel almost nothing (unless you mishit it badly). If you feel much from the club, your wrists are too tense.

Thanks for the reply as I'm working on staying in a more athletic position at impact. I have tried to slow it down my take away but my timing fails miserably. Thanks again for the comments.

Thanks for the reply, There are some targets on the back of the dome that you can't see in the video basically they are basically on the right side of the fake greeen and that is what I was aiming for. Thanks again for the reply.

Thanks for the reply shanks...I'm not certain what you mean by "droop"...do you mean the head of the club? I will try a more passive swing next time on the range...its tough to break old habits. Thanks for the help.

Thanks...so slide instead of turn and open?

Remember what I said about turning the shoulders? After you turn them back, you don't merely turn them back through. You slide your hips forward; just thrust them to the left,

don't turn them (they will turn automatically). This will start the downswing procedure. It will feel like a vacuum is pulling your club down and through the hitting area, and you won't believe the way the ball just penetrates out into the air, and the incredible power that you'll feel at impact. It will feel very unusual, to say the least, but you'll love the feeling of that ball just piercing through the wind like a dart.

Ok...so the hips sliding forward is what should trigger the down swing? I know I want to have that feeling of a penetrating ball flight...Thank yo so much for the comments.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok...so I've been working on trying to get the hips to move towards the target before the they spin out. I think this is better but not 100% sure. Any comments will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Well one step at a time, that was about 5 sessions at the dome and countless swings in the garage to get to what a I thought was somewhat better. Keeping the hands in front is going to be a TOUGH one. Maybe time to get an impact bag?

Looks quite a bit more solid, more body now. Notice the club comes back and sits nice and square to the arms at the top, not drooping like a janitor's keys.

Thanks for the reply, it was a ton of work to get to that point. When you say more body do you mean more shoulder turn? Or something else?

Body in general, legs, hips, shoulders, and core, but less arms. You want minimal arm and wrist involvement, but maximum arms.

Your swing top: You're closer now. You still seem to let the arms do a lot of the turn, but you're getting there. You want to have that position at the top where your whole body is loaded and ready to explode. The shoulder points behind the ball. That's where good players are. Heck, even my fat ass gets there: Despite a huge lack of flexibility (my head must turn back as well, as you can see), my swing generates enormous power, even though I never get off my left side. Because I use my large muscles, I smash the ball.

Shanks thanks for the clarification on that...I've always been a handsy type golfer and after 20 plus years I now understand the game a little more. Jeez wish I was taught the correct swing a while ago. Thanks again. I will add more video in a few weeks to see if I can get the body more involved.

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
