Royal New Kent is a great course, and yes it is pretty tough. Here is a link to an article I wrote about it and a few comments from people who have played it.

I live about twenty minutes from RNK, yet I have only played it once. Here are a couple of things you need two know:

1) Find any Mike Strantz course, and play it. Caledonia in Myrtle Beach is an absolute gem. You will never have more fun playing golf while avoiding very expensive greens fees.

2) Play RNK on a down time. Due to its difficulty/looks, some people take a vvveerrryyy long time to play. My round was 6 hours long.

3) It's tough, but beatable. If you can stay out of major trouble, you can score here. After a triple on the first, a double on 6, I limped into the halfway house with a 44. However, I drove the ball terribly and was regularly finding the fescue stuff. I hit 6 fairways on 7 greens on the back nine and shot a respectable 40 (triple on the last ). The point is, the reason why RNK is considered so tough is because of the trouble you can find. If your swing is good, it's a very fair course.

here are some pics i took of the course:

I have played RNK twice and many of Mark Strantz's designs. I would recommend getting a yardage book at choosing your lines carefully. One thing I have noticed about many of Strantz's designs is that you need to be able to see your ball flight and control your distance. A beautifully struck shot can easily disappear on many of the blind shots. On another note...have fun on the Green course at the Golden Horseshoe...It's not the gold but is still a great course...and get a hotdog with red relish at the concession stand...they are fantastic!!

    • Day 314 - Putting some things together. Better grip/setup, fuller backswing, better finishing position. Filmed some swings, happy with the progress.
    • Day 130: did a stack session.
    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
