hit two hybrids on the monitor recently - 20 deg G15 and 19 deg Adams A7. i hit about 5 shots each. distance for both was right around 235 (220 flight + 15 roll). i've never hit a similar loft hybrid (i've had a bunch) over 215 on the course.

methinks the monitor is "calibrated" for either optimal (unrealistic) conditions or just plan exaggerates so golfers buy that new club they're trying out.

anybody else think so too?

Actually, I find that they are accurate to within about 2-3% of my actual shot distances on the range.

Depends on the monitor.....I'm guessing they can be calibrated and programmed based on the results they want to provide

Practical knowledge:

I have hit those where my good drives fly about 260, which is right on target for no wind and flat ground.
I have hit those where my good drives were over 290, which is wishful thinking at best.

I've found the same craziness with driving ranges - all are not created equal.

It depends on the monitor.
The one we have down at our range is used for lessons as well so it has to be accurate.

Whenever using a launch monitor, bring a couple of your own clubs for a point of reference.

Depends on monitor. Golfsmith by me has some monitor that sits in front of you and takes 2 pictures. They told me that the spin numbers, launch angles, etc. were pretty accurate and said that they've had different customers claim that the distances (carry and roll) are touch and go by about 20 yards. I am longer on the course then what I saw on the monitor.

I think the Trackman is the best out there if you have access to one. I might drive a couple of hours to get time on one.
As Sean mentioned, compare with your own gear.

Anyone know how these monitors account for different balls used ? Different compressions, etc. ?

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
