my golf instructor says i need to swing with my big "muscles". keep my arms out of it. just wondering if i should try to get my right elbow into my side as soon as possible on the downswing? by the way my major problem is an OTT swing.

What the professional is talking about is keeping the arms close to the chest. Tiger woods got away from this were he gets more extension with his arms on the backswing and looses continuity with his body.

To answer your question is, NO do not tuck your right elbow into your chest, this will cause you to loose any extension, as well as be extremely flat on the backswing. What i recommend is keeping your left arm glued to your chest on the backswing and part of the downswing till you rotate through the ball. This will keep your arms connected with your body. You want to feel like you are swinging from your core (abs, hips, thighs, back). These are the muscle groups that are essential in a golf swing, for stability, power and control.

    • Day 198 (16 Nov 24) - A little backyard pitching fun with the grandson with wedges, foam balls today.  Love working with him on short game drills.  Priceless is the word.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open. 
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
    • Day 47 - 2024-11-16 Light backswing work with about 3 or 4 rehearsals for every ball hit. Only about ten minutes while waiting for a potential member to show up (he was 25 minutes late). 😛
