Right,

Everyone on here has been very helpful in the las few days but once again I am after some advice. I am in the process of a major club overhaul. I am getting some new irons (Callaway X-forged prototype, they feel so nice!) and also some new fairway woods. Currently I carry 3-wood, 5-wood, 4-iron etc with 4 wedges.

I find there is a big gap between my 5-wood and 4-iron so I have been thinking about going for a 4-wood and then a hybrid then the new 4-iron. I feel confident with the 4-wood as the course I play is pretty short so on a par 4 I would be loosing too much and the par 5's that I can get on into 2 are normally a long-iron when I am playing well (plus my current 3 wood is a few years old with a steel shaft, a nice shinny new one with a graphite shaft should cancel out some of the difference)

So what sort of loft would I be looking for in a hybrid, I have been looking at the TaylorMade TP Rescue with 19deg, I think that should cover my bases quite well or will it be too similar to the 4-wood?

Or do i go 4-wood, 3-iron, 4-iron. Oh boy decisions decisions, the problem is here in the UK we don't have many places with loads of stock for a full evaluation test. Bummer eh!

Thanks for your advice in advance.

i'm a 4-wood fan for sure -- i hit it as far or farther than my 3-wood (unless the fairways are very dry). My bag is built similarly to what you're thinking (except i can't hit a long iron to save my life so i use 3 through 5 hybrids). Assuming you do go with 4W, then i'd probably say 3-hybrid might be the best gap filler between the 4W and your 4i. If you hit long irons well though and don't mind spending a little more (i'm guessing both by your handicap and your iron selection!) you might want both a 3-hybrid and a 3-iron; depending on that day's wind and course conditions you could swap those out.

Yeah I am liking the idea of getting the 3-iron aswell as the hybrid. I used to have a 2-iron which I swapped with the 5-wood when I only carried 3 wedges, but I save far more shots with my wedges than I ever will with the long clubs so I went for 4 wedges.

I vote for the 4w and forgiving 3i set up (cause its what I have)
see sig for what I play......I think it works great...and my 4w is like frozen ropes...LOVE IT!

but i cant hit hybrids for the life of me

other option.....Mizuno MP Fli Hi 3 or 4i....very nice

Well my brother just picked up a set of the X-Forged (2008) and wow, what a great set of irons, I can't wait to get my hands on the prototypes. With the X-Forged I hit a 3-iron 210yards into the breeze to about 10 foot, beautiful ball flight and great feel. I am now tempted to go with the 3-iron rather than a hybrid as I just love the feel of a long iron, so what if it costs me a shot or two every 4-5 rounds, the feel is brilliant. I now have the confidence to get the prototypes upto 3 iron and if they don't work go for the X-forged 3-iron and maybe even 4-iron too.
