I usually play around 45 for 9-hole. I have not had any birdie for almost a year. Yesterday, i don't know what got to me and i played the best game ever. I shot 3 birdies and 2 par and finished the game with a score of 39 (3 over) for 9 hole. Is this a hoax or is this a start of a better golf?

Prior to this, i have been seeing the pro and training hard, but my score never really improved.

Golf is like that. Those hours on the range and practice greens never really show themselves immediately but one day you'll notice that you're playing better golf than you ever were. My best rounds were those where I didn't feel like I was doing anything differently. I just kept hitting the ball where I wanted and a lot of my putts were going in the hole. Even without going really low score-wise, the best sign for me of a solid low/low-mid handicapper is the usual lack of double bogey or worse on the scorecard and/or having a putt for par on every hole.

Congratulations - any time you can break 40 for a nine, it's a great thing and I do believe it's one of those threshholds that signal you getting to the level of a 'seriously good' golfer. Now it's time to string two together and get your 79!

That said, there's a chance you'll be discouraged if you can't immediately break 40 again or get that 79. Don't worry, you now know that you have the capability and it's just a matter of keeping at it. Golf is a fickle mistress - she takes and she gives without explanation!

I'll second double_j, golf is like that. Last year I went 38 and 53 back to back, and I'm a bogey golfer too. Actually, I think a lot of sports are like that, in basketball sometimes you just get hot and make everything you put up, other days nothing falls. One thing though, once you do break 40, it's like breaking 100 for 18 you know you can do it now. I didn't start to put up sub-40 rounds consistently though, I think getting your score down is a slow progression where there are ups and downs but they start to even out lower and lower. That's the way it's been with me anyway.

Yep, it just depends how you are on the day. You can get one round where you just hit most things straight, and the shots you hit with a major slice come back in bounds from the out of bounds marker.

Then you'll have a round where you'll slam the ball down the fairway and suddenly it'll take a huge kick and roll into some water. The game of golf is ridiculous, but that's why we all love it!

Why don't you go step by step? How about winning your club championship first? When you can do that, you know that you might be one of the best 10,000 players in your state. Win a few amateur tournaments, break 70 most of the time and then reassess. Maybe you can do it. I fail to see why you are setting such a lofty goal without doimng the groundwork. Nothing wrong with ambition, I applaud it, but lets be realistic. Take it one step at a time. Did anyone else suggest that you read Tom Coyne's book? If they did, I apologise for the duplication. If they didn't I recommend it.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.
