Flushed it -- and it went no where

I have a new driver now... my old, dearly beloved one is resting in peace with a shattered face.

I absolutely flushed a big swing, expecting a really fine flight and long carry, but the ball just floats out there and dies. It sure did sound strange. Sure enough, the face of the driver was crushed in with about a inch and a half line just above the mid point cracked open. So this time I go with a 440 cc driver rather than the 460, and I like the newer one better.

Anyone else care to comment on 460 versus 440 sized drivers? I'm using the same brand club, same loft, and same shaft (a new one of course,) but the 440 seems to be more penetrating, while the old one felt a little more springy. Distancewise, the smaller head seems to be hitting it slightly longer but that could be subjective. I want to know what others think that have used both sizes.

I made the swich from a 460cc (FT-5 Tour) to a 440cc (FT Tour) driver this year as well. Both the FT-5 Tour and FT Tour are 9.5' drivers with a Diamana WB (FT Tour was tipped roughly 1/4" which makes it play just a tad stiffer than the FT-5). I find that I hit the 440cc better as well. I'm much more consistent with it than I was my old driver and I'm more confident over the ball. I never could get used to the 460cc heads. 440cc isn't that much smaller but it does appear to be quite a bit smaller which suits my eye better. I also had the new driver built at 44.5" instead of 45", this surely help my consistency as well.

I like the smaller club head, I wouldn't mind if future drivers continued to shrink in size a bit more...

As I understand it the 460 is more forgiving than smaller heads, which to me would lead to less distance. The smaller head is less forgiving and is more workable so that is why it is preferred by better players. It makes sense to me it is longer too, though I wonder if slight mishits would penalize you more severely than the 460 would therefore keeping the 460 longer for most players.

I was looking at VR Tour drivers recently, and noticed that the 9.5 degree and below were 440, and the 10.5 and up were 460. It's certainly making me consider that I wish I could go down a bit in degree if I were to get a new driver.

IIRC, the 440/460 is the STR8FIT where the regular VR Tour has like a 420 or so. Now...how much workability you gain and forgiveness you lose with the smaller head I don't know. As my sig suggests, I am partial to the custom fit stuff myself.
