My pops was a close to scratch Golfer and won some new Titleist DCI 990 in a corporate tournament. He played on them for about a year but passed away in an accident almost two years ago. I inherited his bag and antique club collection and decided to pick up the game. I tried to teach myself but wizened up and decided to take regular lessons of which I;ve had two so far.

My question is, should I ride out the DCI 990's or find a good GI set to improve on. I have good carry and make fairly consistent contact even with the big swing and grip change my teacher introduced.. I have replaced the lower irons in my bag for some hybrids. I'm sort of torn, If I tough it out and learn on the 990's to where I hit those great I know I'll be a stronger player in the long run, but the immediate improvement that a GI club represents is awfully attempting.

Any Thoughts?

The 990s were a good set of irons. You'd enjoy a game-improvement club for the time being, and there are several options out there (Clevelend cg7, Cobra FP2, TM Burner, Ping G15) that will provide forgiveness now with a ton of room for growth.

If you've got the money and the desire to improve, go see a club fitter and have him look at your setup with the 990s and try a few demo irons. I'd keep the 990s around though. When your swing improves and you want the look and feel of a players club, they are a great choice.

In the Bag: TaylorMade R11 TP - TaylorMade R7 TP TS - Cleveland Halo - TM TP 2009 3-PW - Vokey SM 52 - Vokey SM 60 - Rife Barbados CS - ProV1x

Thanks for the advice, much apprectiated.

What of the Callaway X-22's? I don't want to spend too much since I know I've got the 990's waiting for me. I'll never get rid of Pop's clubs, so that's not a worry.

I'm not adverse to getting Clones either as I figure they only need to last a few years, and I can always pass them on to my brother...

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
