definitly free from shops. Its a way for them to get you to buy clubs from them. Most people feel more comfortable or will end up buying their clubs from a store that does this kind of stuff

There's the static fitting that most stores do, which is measuring height and lie angle. In clothing terms, it's like holding up a t-shirt to see if you are an M or L. This is free because it's easy and they want you to buy a new set of clubs. How well you do with the clubs is your problem.

Then there's custom fitting where they measure launch angle, swing speed, spin rate, club swing weight, etc. It's like going to a tailor to get a hand made custom suit. This is what the pros do and cost around $120 depending on the fitter and can take up to 2 hours. My friend spent 4 just fitting his irons. The fitters charge because it's time consuming, uses expensive equipment, and they will continue to work with you after they've adjusted your current or built you a new set.

j_moo, where did your friend go to get fitted for his irons? Have you gotten a dynamic fitting done for yourself? How much was yours? I'm currently looking for a proper fitter in the LA area, but am having little to no luck (odd I know).

As mentioned, there are two types of fittings. One is what you get in the big box store. They watch you swing a club a few times and decide what shaft and club head you need off the rack. Sadly, sometimes the club right for you is the most expensive or one that nets the store the most profit. Usually the person working with you is better than that and will give you the best 'fit' off the rack. They will also look and see if you need the shafts lengthened or shortened or bent up and flat. These fittings run anywhere from free to $50 and usually any cost if forgiven if you buy clubs.

I have done this and got a set of clubs that were not for me. I have also done a full fitting by a custom club fitter.

This was an extensive process that involved using multiple club heads and multiple shafts. Then based on an interview with me, watching me swing my clubs and then different the different setups he had, a final choice was made to be my new clubs. If you look at my signature you can hit a link to a blog I wrote about my experience. This option is more expensive, but you get what you pay for. The clubs I have are ordered to specific specs of weight, loft, and (on some brands) even specific CPM counts on shafts.

To the OP, I can't tell you what it would cost to do this where you are from. Where I am it is somewhere in the neighborhood of $125-150 for irons, wedges, or woods or $275-325 for a full bag.

I found this guy in Long Beach, Bob Hickman. He sounds pretty legit and I played today with a guy, Chuck, who said he is pretty good. Bob only charges $50, which is a very good deal.

I was going to see Bob tomorrow. However, Chuck, owner of two custom sets and drivers, and numerous other clubs, suggested that I go to Roger Dunn instead. His argument is that custom sets are great, but how long will you have that swing? If your swing won't change, then custom clubs are great. If you are always trying to change your swing, it might be a better idea to get a fitting at Roger Dunn and try a few different clubs because they take returns for full store credit. If you're looking to buy irons, custom irons will be about the same as a good set in the stores. Drivers, on the other hand, can get expensive very quickly.

    • I did the RTJ trail, we just did Grand National and Capitol Hill. We were trying to minimize travel time. It gave us 5 courses to play. You pare playing 3 of the 5 we played.  If I had to pick, I would play the Lakes over the Links at Grand National. Links felt too penal on approach shots. If you can't get height or spin, it felt like every ball that hit the center of the green ran off the back. A lot of the greens require force carry, no running it up. It just wasn't that fun to play.   Judge - Really good course, some really cool holes and terrain.   Senator - Really fun open course. They call it link style, I can't remember how much you can play the ball down, but it has the aesthetic appeal.
    • I do that at the range; I just have been going through a half-assed pre-shot routine. 😇 I just kind of waltz up to the ball and hit it. I catch myself just going through the motions of aiming. Once I started aligning my club to an intermediate target, I felt like I was aligned way open to the target but just trusted it. Like, if the club was aimed at the flag in the middle of the green, then my body was aligned left of the green or more (assuming something like a 100+ yard shot). I think I was more concerned with where my feet were lined up and not the clubface.  A question on alignment then.  So, the ball is like what, 3-FT away from the toe target line. So, does that mean if my toe line is aimed at the flag, the club is aimed 3-ft right? Does the perception of the green looking smaller in the distance impact that in terms of how we hit the shot? I feel like the geometry should work that the ball is actually aimed 3-FT right.
