since i have been trying to hit down on the ball i have really worked on not casting my irons. But what i found out today was a was not following through, when i started to really get my wrists through i stopped shanking it. But when i look at other peoples swings they dont look like they are really wristy, but being wristy is the only way i dont shank it

Where on the clubface are you impacting the ball when you didn't shank? (I use Post-Its on the face.) When you did not shank, was there a bad slice instead? In other words, was the face open at impact so that the club face was shortened and the clubhead approached the ball hosel first? This could be compensated for by crossing the wrists right after impact, which it sounds like you are doing; not a fix but a compensation for another problem. I would check the position of the club face at all points of the swing--possible that the swing is opening the clubface somewhere.

My own shanking problem--after the rank beginner stage, that is--was on the driving range when I tried to hit the ball very hard. I decided that centrifugal force was pulling my hands outward, causing a shank. Stopped it by lining up the ball off the toe instead of the sweet spot. Bruised an ankle with some of those shanked balls. I no longer try to swing fast or hard, and my ball striking is much improved.

when i didnt shank it i was hitting it on the sweet spot and for the most part they were going straight.

yeah i guess i never really thought of lining it up further away from me, thats a good i idea if for some reason i keep on shanking

Not all shanks are caused by getting the club too far from your body at impact. In my case it's usually a path problem. When I come over the top on a swing the first thing presented to the ball is the hosel. Sometimes I'll save it and square the clubface and hit a pull, or a cut shot, sometimes it's a shank.

Be careful doing this. If you start compensating for the shanks by standing further from the ball, your brain may start to over compensate causing you to throw your hands out at the ball. This will result in more shanks and even further frustration. The greatest advice I got when I had a minor case of the shanks was to stand slightly closer to the ball. It seems counterintuitive, but it helped me to concentrate on keeping my hands in and on the correct path.

umm yeah guys i definitely did not fix my shanks.

today at sectional golf today my game just decided to halfway through my round start shanking the ball on just about every shot from 5 hybrid to my gap wedge. No matter what i tried i could not stop it. I just dont get it i can be having a great round and then all the sudden start shanking them. On the back nine hole 10 was when i got them, it was a par 3 with OB way right. Shank my 6 off the tee, hits a cart path bounces even more right, then from there, about 130 out, i shank 2 balls out of bounds and end up taking a 10 on the hole.

i really need to get this shit straighted out ecpecially your the #1 seed and your hitting your irons like this, there were about 10-15 people following my group around and it was just flat out embarrasing.

im thinking the best thing to do is see an instructor and just focus on irons

Any video? Shanking is usually the result of weight shift towards or away from the ball during the swing. It's not so easy to shank with just your arms as it will be kind of obvious that you're throwing your arms too far out. Note how you have your weight at address and be aware that it doesn't move forward or backward during the swing. Obviously, it's okay for it to move left and right appropriately.

okay so i taped my swing and looked at it and i was fanning my club on my backswing horribly. So i fixed that and well see how that works it will probably take a couple rounds because one day i could shoot a 75 and then the next day shank all my shots and shoot a 90

    • Day 3, April 11, after the Masters and before dinner, I had time (quite a bit of time, actually) to hit about two dozen practice balls, complete with the pelvis limiting drill.  As with the past two days, I would do the drill for pelvis limiting, then take slow rehearsals of the backswing, checking positions in a mirror, and then reset and hit.  These were all indoors, off a mat, into a net, primarily with a 6-iron, although a few were with a 9-iron.
    • Day 234 4-11 Wrist arching and hips/chest in backswing. Really trying to hammer in the wrist arch, its such a  better swing when I do it correctly, its not in muscle memory yet.
    • Day 557 - 2026-04-11 Got some work in after lessons. Backswing has to be shorter. Slightly cupped.
    • You know, I haven't followed much professional golf the past few years, and he wasn't the star of today's show, but I think I like this Sam Burns fellow.  I hope he plays well tomorrow.
    • All of these missed fairways and the miraculous escapes followed by the seemingly reliable miracles suddenly stopping reminds me of another former Masters champion whose luck ran out on the 72nd hole of a major twenty years ago.
