Hi all....first time poster, long time reader :)

I have just picked up a Titleist 909F3 13deg 3 wood and just 1 round in am loving it, especially off the tee. It has a stiff, Aldila Voodoo shaft in it which feels pretty good.

I have a chance to pick up a 909 D3 driver for a pretty good price and have been given the chance to choose from either the stock Aldila Voodoo stiff or a Graphite Design Aura Red Stiff shaft. Not being too much of a know it all on shafts I am a bit stuck which to pick?

I am a former +1 handicap, getting back into the game again, playing off 4.2 now. Reasonably strong swing.

Any help so much appreiciated :)

try them out on a launch monitor.
It's the only way to get a good idea of what they're like

The Aldila Voodoo shaft never suited my swing. I used a D3 with it and hit a huge ballon shot of every swing.
I tested a D3 with a whiteboard X yesterday and loved it. Unfortunatly, that is not much help though.
I would just watch out that you don't get to much backspin with the Aldila Voodoo.

I wish I could, unfortunately Launch Monitors are pretty few and far between around here and the club is out of town. So will have to choose without trying first.

I wouldn't advise buying then.

I guess my question is Does anyone have any experience with the graphic design shafts? I am well aware that a launch monitor would be my ideal but do not have the opportunity unfortunately, so thought I would ask the knowledgeable people on here :)

If you don't have access to anywhere that has a launch monitor, I'm sure you've got some place close that has a Titleist fitting cart? With their interchangeable heads/shafts, you can literally try all their shaft offerings in a short period of time. What works for someone else, may not work for you which is why anyone's opinion on shafts here is irrelevant.

I have a UST AxivCore Tour Red in my 909D3 and like it, but that doesn't mean much as far as your swing is concerned.

You can look up trajectory and torque on both Aldila and Graphite Designs websites, if you know which exact model (weight, etc) of each shaft you are choosing between. Chances are they are both 65g, and likely in the low 3.0 torque range with mid-trajectory.

As others have said, to be "fit" for a shaft, it would be ideal of have a launch monitor. However, if it's a good deal, it's unlikely that either shaft will produce poor results as long as your swing is suited for a stiff and you don't launch the ball unusually high or low.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
