i had the x-22 for two weeks. I didnt like how big the topline was and the sole. They are chucky clubs. There is nothing too special about them to be honest. Your getting the same club as a x-20 or x-18 performance wise.

Im going to purchase either tonight and I found that a set of burners that are about $100 cheaper then the x22's. The x22's are my first choice but Im wondering if its worth getting the burners if they are better?

By the looks of your sig, it looks like you are playing x-22s currently? Also, as a +1.7 handicap, what is drawing you to these two sets?

Ive never hit the burners so I couldnt tell you which is better. I think people like burners more though. Personally I would get the burners over the x22 but thats because I have had exerience with the x-22. With the x-22 I really didnt like short game shots 8,9, pw because they are so big. I had alot of problems with the pw.

I actually have no idea what my handicap is. It wouldnt let me sign up without one and thats the example it listed so I used it haha. My sig has either what I have to what im planning on getting. I have everything except the irons and wedges. I have a mix/match set currently but since im playing more often I decided to upgrade. I was all set to buy the x22's tonight but I found the burner plus's for a $100 cheaper. So now I dont know which to get.

Have you hit either? Have you been fitted? I will tell you that if you are interested in the Callaway clubs, You should look that the x-20's, they are similar and the Maltby playability facor is higher on the x-20's. They can be bought for $399. They would be a great iron set to get you started. Buy the at Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith and they will bend them to the correct lie angle for you.

I have hit the x22's. A friend of mine has the set.

From Ralph Maltby about the reason the x-20 are more forgiving than the x-22's:

"Callaway has distributed the weight differently on the x-22's, which has caused the vertical C.G. to be raised from .635” in the X-20 to .741” in the X-22. This obviously lost them some MPF points. Some of this is probably due to the new hosel design for their 2009 bore through models. All the other iron specifications for measuring MPF such as “C” Dimension and MOI are similar in both models.

Here is a good suggestion. Hit the short irons from the grass out of both sets especially the pw and see which you like better

Your signature has 19 clubs in it :)

I'd try and hit both sets and decide.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
