Hey everyone. Recently all my friends have been going golfing a lot more now that we are in college. Feeling a little curious i went to the driving range with them and had an excellent time. From there i've started taking lessons with the pro at our local course because i felt that i should learn it (golf) right rather than develop tons of bad habits.

On that note...I have been taking lessons once a week for two months so far (8). I am getting fitted for clubs and I tried the Cleveland Launchers, Cleveland (the black ones CG-7?), Mizuno MX-300, AP1, AP2, Ping G15, and TaylorM Burners.

I honestly hit better and felt better with the AP2 and the MX-300....with the MX-300 above the Ap2. These are both irons that i believe are above my skill level...however i hope to get their with practice.

My question after all of this would be: Is it wise to get ones that I'm hitting well with that i will grow into over the year rather than getting an extremely forgiving Ping G15?

I probably hit 8/10 shots well now but obviously hope to get better. It is when i did hit them well it was more often and felt better with the MX-300.

The feel of the forged Mizunos were phenominal. I love the thinner look of the top and the little to no offset. I also hit OK with the G15 but the feel was subpar and dislike the offset along with the thick soles.

All thoughts and rambles welcome! Thanks-

David

Sounds like you have your answer - you like the feel, looks, and results so far of the MX-300's. As long as you get fitted properly, and these hit and feel the best, then have at it. The MX-300's will last longer than one season, and never under-estimate confidence standing at address and looking at eye-pleasing equipment. Post back after a few rounds.

If you like the MX 300's go for it. I personally never recommend anything more SGI than about the MX 300, and I think anyone can play them.

Out of curiosity, where are you going to college? Your location is listed as Delaware, and I'm going to University of Delaware as a freshman in the fall, so just wondering.

In my bag:

Just a couple of thoughts:

Did you hit the MX-300 the best or did it simply feel the best when you hit a ball on the screws? I agree with the post above about having confidence at address, but if there's a club that you hit the ball better with, but perhaps didn't care for the look, then it's probably worth some more consideration or hitting some more with those two clubs.

Second thought: check out the mx-200. I hit them last week and they felt nice. The head size is a touch bigger than the 300 so it might be a little more forgiving. Also, maybe a look at the i15?

I'm kind of in the same boat as you as I play X-20s and would like a thinner top line, but my irons were great last week and helped me get my handicap down to 12. Decision, decisions...

Just a couple of thoughts:

So today I went back and hit all the clubs again with your thought in mind. (Besides feel on good hits how'd other compare and such) As i said, I then re-tried all the original clubs. In the end I hit (after warm up and a lot of switches) about +4 (out of 20) more balls better with the MX300s again. I think this is enough proof that I will go with them. Also on this website, click reviews. The 4th-ish one down is about these clubs and the author says he can see players even with a 20 handy cap using these. Perfect. Ill just make sure I got all the other "Settings" set at the pro-shop.

300s are good clubs for a new player. Unlike a lot of other SGI and GI irons, they are something that is forgiving enough for you to start out with but yet have enough workability that you wont outgrow them in a year or 2.

I could go on and on about them, but I'd just be repeating myself. You can see my review here . I kinda disagree with a few of the replies in that I dont think the MX-300s are a good solution for a new player - I really think they'd be great in the hands of nearly any player. I just didn't think they fit neatly in the GI category, they kinda blurred the lines between players iron and GI iron in my opinion. And I mean all this in the most positive way possible. Quite simply, they're awesome.
