So most of this year there has seemed to be something in the way of my back swing. it has felt like i couldnt rotate my forearms easily and my back shoulder would get all bunched up. sometimes it wouldnt get in the way but i found out why it was.

if this helps anyone it will help somebody who has problems hooking the ball more than anything.

i have always heard people say to grip the club more with your front hand than your back hand, and i have always thought duh. well i somehow actually thought farther into this and noticed that i really had way too much of my right hand in my swing. i think this also might have had something to do with why my right elbow starts to hurt sometimes when i golf.

so i started taking some practice swings with my left hand and arm in control and my right hand really loose. that is what all of my good swings felt like. i still have to go out on the course any work on it but it feels like i have figured this out. any thoughts?

oh and i have a drill that i think goes along with this.

grip the club normally, but then take the index finger from your bottom hand and take it from the back of the grip to the front of the grip (so the grip runs on the space between your index and middle finger). take a few practice swings. you should probly feel some pressure at the top of your swing in that space due to lag and all, but if it feels like that is where you are pushing the club down at the ball then you are using your back hand too much.

take a few more swings, feel the lag and make sure your front hand is in control.

anybody chime in on this

I've noticed some elbow soreness on my trailing arm... Also, a couple of different feels with swings. Can definitely feel the hinge in my wrist at times, and other times, I'm restricting the backswing further up with my trailing index finger. Not sure which is "right".

Currently in my bag:  Under Revision

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
