Must you hit a 3 iron most pros dont hit 3 irons the hybrid is so easy to hit easy to control and goes 20 yards past any long iron

A lot of pros carry 3 and even 2 irons - depending on the course they're playing. I carried a 2 iron playing a tight course last Sunday. Today I was in a scramble with some slight dogleg par 5s - I carried the Wilson Fybrid so I could throw the ball over the trees.

Anyway, telling people they absolutely need a specific club over another is just plain wrong.

I just purchased a set and highly considered not even buying the 3i. Unfortunately it would take over a month to ship the 4-gw so odds are it will just be sitting at my home collecting dust now

It is funny when I started playing golf I never heard anyone considering not having a 3 iron, 2 or 1 sure, but a 3 iron. Sure it not as easy to hit as a 5 or 6 iron, but come on it is not that hard to hit, just practice a bit. It is funny I actually have more trouble hitting my damn taylor made rescure tp 19 hybrid than I do my muscle back blade three iron.

Ug, hybrids? I can't even count the number of times I've duffed, topped, and shanked hybrids. Tried em, hated em. They suck, they always come with shafts like wet noodles, and the lie angle is always far too flat. With my long irons, I can have the lie angle adjusted to my desire, put a nice X stiff shaft on it, and swing away. I've had so few problems on course with long irons, although everyone keeps telling me I should, and I will, and blah blah, my long irons continue to be my favorite clubs.

I was just looking into a Pro Combo 2i to go with my set. It seems they do not sell the tour version like I have, but it may not be a big deal. What are your thoughts on a 2i? (I know you carry one obviously, but I would like one to fill the gap between my 2h and 3i...2h=215-220 and 3i=190-195)

I couldn't find a pro combo 2 to match my set. They had the OS version, which is not something I want. I will keep looking for the pro combo 2 for now. My 2 iron is the gap between 3 wood and 3 iron. The only difference between the pro combo and the pro combo tour, as far as I know, is that the regular models have a little plate in the back cavity, the tour models don't.

Yeah i don't mind the plate. I will probably go ahead and get it. They are priced a little ridiculous for an older club though.

I suffer some of the same at times. My cure for my driver slice is to make sure my hands are under my chin when driving, (keep the club close to me so as I'm not reaching.) It feels a little cramped at first but it has been working. As far as hitting 3 iron to right. You may need a more upright lie on your club. Having the wrong lie shows up more in the long irons. I hit my 3 to the right, 4 a little less, 5 a little better etc. I then had lie changed and it was much better. It's true the less loft the more possibility for side spin but lie is also a factor that is often times over looked. You keep hearing "get fitted, get fitted...." It made a huge difference for me. Shooting high90's to mid 80's. Good luck. I wish I could get a hybrid with a three iron length shaft and a 5 wood shafted driver with correct lie. Mizuno has the mp direct iron replacement hybrid which is a souped up iron. Check out the Mizuon site. I love my mizunos. mp52's. I find them very easy to hit. Good luck and let us know the solution when you find it.

Like you Paddy, I hated my driver swing and used to tee off with irons and the occasional 3 wood. I played this way for years and never missed the driver except for the occasional par 5's. But if I were you, I would seriously reconsider a hybrid over a standard 3 iron. The hybrid really is a great club for a great assortment of shots. (Fairways bunkers) (chipping) (rough) etc. etc. I have recently been practicing some semi cut punch type shots with mine, and some choke down wind punch shots. I wish they made these 15 years ago....... I would have been in heaven.

You guys make learning to hit a 3-iron properly sound like learning to ride a unicycle - on a tight rope.

Maybe it's because I regularly hit a 2-iron, but a 3 is really not that hard to hit.

3i is one of my favourite clubs.

I use it on the Par 5's if I want to lay up. I practice with it a lot on the range though, most people hardly ever hit their longer clubs

Par 5 layups are the best time to hit mid and long irons - even if you top it, you're probably still hitting into the green in regulation. Some of the purest swings I've ever had were par 5 layups.

I agree that a 3 iron is pretty easy to hit. I quite often take it of the tee especially when my driver is not doing so well. I love hit it when others take their driver off the tee and I hit it just as far. With my new irons I've about decided to get a 2 iron. For the op, if you haven't decided yet I personally would go for the 3, if you believe you can hit it. Use it to lay up to your perfect approch distance or take it over the water on that par 5.

I hit a 2 & 3 iron pretty well, not as high as I used to, but overall pretty well. I was suggesting the versatility of a hybrid over the 2 or 3 irons. A 2 or 3 iron doesnt come close to the versatility of a hybrid ........ so why limit your options? When the majority of Pro's use them....... then they must be thinking the same thing as well.

Not limiting one's options is exactly why I carry long irons. I replace my 2-iron with a fairway hybrid quite often, and understand the reasoning, but for every extra shot gained with the hybrid, something else is lost by not carrying the 2-iron. Different strokes for different folks.

hybrids fly really high.

One great thing about long irons is that they can get under the wind when you want them to do so.

You swing faster than me though.

I hit mine mid-height and can make it go low. A hybrid goes a lot higher than my 3i

    • Day 332: worked on my grip while watching pasta boil. Then did some mirror work later at night.
    • You start pushing forward at P2. You start visibly moving forward at P3. Waiting until the top is way too late, yeah.
    • 100%. I've been guilty my entire time golfing of trying to fit everything imaginable into the .25 second downswing. Sometimes I think it's partly influenced by my backswing length and that if things were slightly longer on the way back, they'd be better synced up on the way down. I also kind of lack a transition. Was doing the practice swing drill today a decent bit where I was feeling like as the club got to the top, the feel of the weight was shifting me forward and initiating the fall into the lead leg. I loved this drill before for this reason and because I need to stop thinking of the golf swing as backswing and downswing.
    • The bold is very late.
    • Angle isn't perfect. Just found my TST alignment stick, so will make sure video angles are better in future videos. Focus right now is lower body and lower body only. If I make a single post here for the foreseeable future about anything NOT lower body focused, I need to be slapped (I will make an occasional note on unrelated stuff I might be seeing). It's not perfect by any means, but there is a decent bit I like about this swing. Lower body is definitely better than it was pre-TST meetup instruction. There are some things that are tough to see I think I'm doing better like where pressure is going into the trail foot and keeping that trail hip internally rotated. Need to keep feeling those. I think I do my best work when the trail leg keeps its flex on the backswing or at most loses a degree. Keeping the flex (but obviously not adding any) seems to help feel like I'm loading the right glute and to keep the hip internally rotated. Not totally sold on this though. I think my work on adding flow during the TST COVID-19 lessons really helped even though its been quite some time. Shift -> rotate -> shift -> rotate. I just need more out of my hips. It's not drastic, but it's everything. I think it will help sync up a lot regarding my swing and more power to boot. Unrelated note: I hate my negative spine angle.
