It seems I can't play a round without getting excruciating leg cramps the next morning. I drink lots of soda, tea and if I don't drink a couple jugs of Gatorade I'm in trouble the next morning. Gatorade and Powerade help but they aren't my "cup of tea" so to speak! Whats the best thing for the cramps?

I have this problem also, except mine hit in the middle of the night. MY Dr. could not explain. I eat bannanas every day, drink lots of fluid. I called up my old trainer from when I was a competive runner. She said people with diabetes or poor circulation are especially vulnerable to this problem. She explained that tea and soda act as mild diuretics and are not effective at hydration. She reccomends diet instant lemonade, or water. She thinks gatorade is a waste of money, and has additives which she feels strain your kidneys. She also told me that your body retains fluid from foods much more effeciently than liquids. Salads, fruits and veggies are best. Probably you already know this but applying heat and stretching after playing, in the shower, or when you have cramps helps. Stretching without heat is not a good idea unless you are in the middle of vigorous exercise and your muscles are well loosened up already.

Allin... thanks. That was a good explanation of a problem I too have developed with age. Cramping both on the course and at night. I think it's truly a circulation problem. But, eating bananas does seem to help me some. It's hell geting old.

I had forgotten about the bananas and haven't been eating them of late. Need the potassium for sure! Thanks for that. I'll get back to eating them, and yes getting old is the pits! I wonder if Viagra would help?

I was suffering from leg cramps almost every night and walking the course caused my calves to cramp up terribly. I decided to check it out and my Doc discovered I have Peripleral Arterial Disease. This is a precursor for Coronary Artery Disease, so they also checked me for that. The result of those tests got me a stent in my heart and then an atherectomy to clean out my left femoral artery. I got lucky in that they found and corrected the problems before I had a heart attack or lost a lot of muscle tissue in my left leg.

The older we get, the more important it is to have your doctor look at any aches and pains you are getting. I have found out that if something hurts, it may be an indicator of a serious problem. Those can be corrected if we get to them soon enough. Hydration might not be the underlying problem.

    • Day 52: simulator day. Played Old Head and shot an “80,” which was probably more like a 78 in a non-simulator. Then worked on irons for 15 minutes, and may have found a good feel.
    • Day 14: 2026.01.16 Some swings late in the day to confine trying to embed the hip rotation I'm working on.
    • I don't know what to tell you. You can't test wedges with range balls, and you have a LOT more info to gather before you can begin to really even test anything else, either.
    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
