So I was discussing the UK HC system with my friend and neither of us are members of a club but I thought it would be interesting to see what his HC would be. So the story is that he has a few pars per round, a number of bogies, some double bogies and crucially several holes which are 7s/8s/9s. The outcome of this was, with respect to the (+2) rule for blow up holes that though he finished 31 over par, his actual handicap based on the card he produced would have been 22.

Provided this is plausible and I've calculated it correctly (albeit not following all the procedures) is it often the case that players whose scores are bad because of blow up holes aren't accurately represented.

My friend will never shoot 22 over par for a round and believes that the system is producing a farcial outcome where it is in theory possible that somebody who plays 22 over par will have the same HC as him.

With all due respect, your friend should work more on his course management. If he's getting "a few pars" per round, he "should be" lower than a 22. BTW I thought ESC only used double bogey for an index of 18 or less?!?!?

He should absolutely use course management, he is the most carefree golfer out there. Do you think it could be +3 for 18 and over? I may have overlooked that.

edit:

"CONGU allows double bogey (+2) maximum, on any hole. Therefore, if a player takes 8 shots (gross score) on a par 5, the maximum score allowed for that hole is 7 (adjusted Gross Score)"

I'd say he plays really aggressive and that's why he has pars and a load of double's/triples

Course management really wont come into it as his irons are as wayward as his drives which are also extremely long.

It doesn't matter as we don't want to make our handicaps official and play in competitions but it was eye opening to see just how exclusionary the handicap system is for a higher handicap inconsistent player.

The idea that a player could get a few pars and a number of bogies mixed in with several tripples or worse is off the radar of the handicap system it would seem.

Yeah CONGU is harsh, I have put 95% of all my scores over the last 2 and half years on the Scoretracker on TodaysGolfer, it has me at a 17.3

Based on the 3 cards I put in at my new club (the lowest being an 86 PAR 70) which I thought would put me 16HC and I came out a 13, when I aksed how come I had lost 3 shots I had the CONGU rule posted by the OP about max +2.

I have now played in several comps and off 13 and now 14 (13.8) and scores points wise have been 25/20/24/25/19 but at least my HC is going up towards how I really play, allbeit slowly.

    • Great year last year. Who winning this year could be another special story? Brooks? Spieth? Or Aberg? An AM? I dont know if anything could top last year
    • I love Rancho Park too!  I don't get out there much due to the 405 issues (Im in Santa Clarita) but I do try and get out there every now and then...last time out was in January where I eagled 17 (left green) with a holed 145 yard third shot ! Rancho is a great course! And at 24 bucks weekday with the city card, an absolute steal!
    • I have played PGA West, at least one or two courses in there, but I am not sure if I've played any of the courses used to host the Hope. I played a course that I think both isn't PGA West and is host to the Hope a few years ago, possibly at a TST outing, but I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the right one. I have played Rancho Park plenty of times (exactly half of my sub-80 rounds were there!) and Wilson/Harding.  Rancho Park might be my favorite golf course among those I've played more than a half dozen times.   Hopefully I'll get a chance to play TPC Scottsdale, maybe this August or September, and at some point I think there was a PGA Tour event in Las Vegas, I should get up there and play those course(s).
