I saw on Rockbottomgolf that they were having a weekend sale, and I've been looking for a good 52* and 56* wedge. Granted any advice you'll give me would be blind, without knowing much about me (beyond being a beginner who's just trying to fill out his bag and get rid of an old wedge from nearly 10 years ago). Their sale seems to have a decent amount of wedges from Nickent, Nike, Adams and the like in the $20 section, and I've not yet looked through the rest of the $30-90 area.

If someone's given their sale a look, any ideas for me? Of course I've not been fitted, I just wanted to know if anyone's used these clubs and their opinions... plus any helpful advice ;)

FYI, their sale (specifically, the $20 section) link is here: http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/newsletter22.html

Edit: Of course, now I've looked around at stuff and a couple things caught my eye: The Adams Idea A3 set (52 56 60) for $90, the Cleveland CG14 wedge (though $70 for one, yikes... yeah, I don't have a ton of cash right now), and the Purespin Golf Tour Series Diamond Face set (52 56 60) at $60. Cleaning's an issue with that one it seems, though they all seem pretty well reviewed (and I believe I've seen the Adams and CG14 around here in people's bags before).

What's in my Tartan Precise TS-869 Bag:
Woods: Northwestern 1W, 3W, stock grip
Hybrids: 855 Graphite shaft 3H, 4H, Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize grips
Irons: 855 R flex steel shaft 5-PW, Golf Pride Tour Wrap midsize grips
Wedges: PureSpin Tour Series Diamond Face 52* AW, 56* SW, 60* LW, Golf Pride...

For the cost, either the The Adams Idea A3 set (52 56 60) for $90 or the Purespin Golf Tour Series Diamond Face set (52 56 60) at $60 look like great deals for some one on a budget. I actually like the looks of the Purespin more.

There's also the Tom Watson PVD 3-Wedge Set at $70 listed here http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-...wedge-set.html

I avoided them at first just because they were black. I also haven't really seen them around, same thing with the Purespin wedges. Both the Purespin and Adams wedges are growing on me, though. Not quite sure how severe the cleaning issue is on the Purespins though.

You might check out the Adams 3-wedge sets, either the Ideas or the Watsons. If they feel good, you might get them. If you want different wedges a couple of years later, you could get a decent trade on the Adams.

One thing: The lob wedge may be a bit difficult to use until your swing stabilizes.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I have a single Adams Watson PVD 56 degree and love it. It's not really anything special as wedges go, but it's a quality wedge with a light swing weight for a very good price. I'd highly recommend the 3-wedge set; if I could go back, I'd have picked that up.

The one problem is that the PVD black finish does NOT stay intact when you play in the sand. It ends up as a fairly odd two-tone club, with the finish on the top part and the bare metal on the bottom/lower edge of the face. It's fine with me, but if you're really concerned with appearances, I might recommend one of the other Adams wedge sets.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

Unfortunately, the sale's only running through the weekend and I can't find any shop that seems to have any of those wedges in to test. So it looks like I'm just going to be relying on input. I found a free shipping code for RBG, so that'll knock off $17 from the final price for whatever I'm going to get (if anything).

Right now, at least to me, I'm leaning toward the Idea A3's. I've not really heard of Purespin, and it seems like the Adams ones would be good.

I just bought a CG10 60 degree because i misplaced my old Nike 60 degree. I've played only one round with it and absolutely love it. I'm going to buy the 52 and 56 now to replace my old cobra gap and trusty rusty cobra 57

Still not quite sure about the buy. Would it be good for me, at least pricewise to at least fill out my wedges before taking lessons (which are next on my list), or would lessons hopefully lead me toward better clubs?

If there is a great deal available on the Tom Watson wedges I say go for it. I rotate those in with my Vokey and MacGregors with absolutely no loss of performance. In fact, the 54/10 Watson Classic I got a few weeks ago puts a tremendous amount of spin on the ball. Lessons are a great idea, but they won't steer you towards better clubs. Lessons will make you better no matter what you are playing.

Looks like the Watson PVDs are out of stock for now. They say they may get more in every day, so I'll have to check tomorrow (the last day of the sale). Back to the Idea A3s and the Purespins for now, it looks like.

Sorry-they'll be back in stock eventually. I'd actually go with the Purespins before the Adams A3s, but I just prefer blade wedges. My dad gave me a Purespin GW that was great-I used it for about 8 years. If you're considering spending $90 on the A3 set then I'd direct you to budgetgolf. They have the Adams Tom Watson

Classic wedge set (52, 56, 60) for $95. The Tom Watson Classic is a newer model than the PVD. I have the PVD set, and I ordered the Classic 54/10 individually-and it might be my favorite of the bunch. http://www.budgetgolf.net/xcart/prod...045_f0722_2056

Hmm, that's a possibility too... Anyone else in this thread have a comment on the TW Classics? Also, did the Surespins have the same kind of finish as described on rockbottomgolf? Some golfers complained about them getting quite dirty and taking some time to clean up. Of course, that's likely all cosmetic, but I'd like something that looks a little respectable. ;)

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
